SOLON– The Solon wrestling team advanced all three of its district qualifiers to the state tournament to be held later this week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The trio consisting of 113-pounder Louis Gnida, 195-pounder Lance Evans, and heavyweight Logan Linderbaum had a near-perfect day, combining to win five of the six matches they wrestled.
Gnida took first place in impressive fashion, winning by decision 8-1 in his first match, before pinning his opponent in the finals.
Evans, coming off of knee surgery and wrestling for just the second time this season, was equally impressive, winning by fall in the first round and by a score of 7-0 in the finals. Evans has not surrendered a single match point in the four matches he has wrestled since returning to action.
Linderbaum’s matches were arguably the most exciting of the tournament. In round one he almost defeated the third-ranked wrestler in the state, giving up a takedown in the last 30 seconds, and losing by a score of 3-2. In his wrestle-back for second place, against another highly ranked wrestler, the match was tied 1-1 going into the final period when his opponent suffered an injury and was unable to continue. Linderbaum was declared winner by injury default, finishing in second place.
