SOLON– The weather has been cold and wet, and the sun didn’t shine on the Spartans as they hosted the No. 1 team in Class 1A last week.
Solon’s boys’ soccer team fell to Dyersville Beckman, 1-0, Friday in Solon, the first loss of the season. The Spartans are 3-1-1.
“We obviously picked a bad opponent to turn in our worst performance of the year,” reported head coach Jeremy McMurrin. “It would have been very ugly if it wasn’t for Joe Weeks in goal, who made 16 saves out of 17 chances.”
Earlier in the week, the Spartans traveled to West Liberty for a match with the Comets which ended in a scoreless tie.
“Defensively we were very solid,” said McMurrin of the West Liberty game. “We limited West Liberty to very few shots.” Weeks recorded one save in goal.
McMurrin said Ben Hoy, Ryan Kunkel, Keegan Paisley and Adam Nelson-Ockenfels led the defense along with Weeks. Andrew West also played well, he said.
“Offensively we had a bunch of chance on goal but just couldn’t put one in,” he said.
The Spartans hosted West Delaware Monday night (April 15) and were scheduled to play on the road at Anamosa Friday and at Western Dubuque April 23.
