SOLON– The Solon boys soccer team entered the postseason on a strong note, blasting Washington 7-0 Wednesday to advance in substate play.
The Spartans scored six times in the first half, including the first two goals by Tim Lance, which came within a minute of each other.
After that, Solon seemed to score at will and controlled the field of play, allowing Washington only three shots at the goal for the game.
Austin Holub, Austin Hunt, Brandan Childs and David Coberly all found the back of the net against the Demons in the first period. Adam Nelson-Ockenfels scored the lone goal of the second half. Assists went to Nick Brown (2) and Holub.
Washington advanced to play Solon after beating Fort Madison 4-1 Monday night.
The Spartans were expected to host Mount Pleasant Saturday (May 25, subsequent to the early deadline for this issue) in a substate final.
The state soccer tournament for Class 2A is scheduled to begin Thursday, May 30, in Des Moines.
Solon closed out its regular season May 14 with a 5-0 battering of Williamsburg on the road.
Nick Brown scored twice to pace the Spartans, with additional goals by Childs, Coberly and Andrew West. Colton Dall and Chase Gross picked up assists. Joe Weeks shut out Williamsburg with two saves in goal.
