SOLON– The Lady Spartans are on their way to Ft. Dodge.
Solon’s softball team punched its ticket with a 11-0 substate win over Maquoketa last Tuesday.
The Lady Spartans open the Class 4A State Softball Tournament Tuesday, July 23, (subsequent to the publication of this edition) against Washington (29-11). The winner plays either Waverly-Shell Rock (34-8) or Carlisle (32-7) on Thursday, July 25, with the 4A championship Friday, July 26, at 4:45 p.m. All of it takes place at Harlan Rogers Park north of Ft. Dodge.
It was a fairly easy road for the Lady Spartans.
The 11-0 victory over Maquoketa lasted only five innings, with Emily Ira tossing a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Ira was also effective at the plate, going 2-2 and picking up a walk.
Solon’s offense connected with 16 hits, almost all of them singles.
But that was more than enough.
The lone double belonged to Taylor Nearad. Nearad knocked in four runs, two of them with the extra base hit in the fourth inning. Ira had singled to start off the inning, while Sydney Lawson (3-3) laid down a bunt single. Alyssa Rickels walked to load the bases after Mallory Madsen flied out, and then Nearad delivered her double. She scored later in the inning on an Ali Herdliska (3-3) single to make the score 8-0.
The Lady Spartans added three more runs in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule at the end of the inning.
