Mary Jane Armstrong, 80, of Mechanicsville, died suddenly on Oct. 28, 2013, at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, with her daughters by her side. She was the daughter of John William and Marie Evelyn (Kinnan) Frederick, born Nov. 13, 1933, in Cedar Bluff. Janie, as she was known, graduated from Tipton High School in 1950 and fell in love with Grant H. Armstrong. They were united in marriage in Boston, Mass., on Aug. 16, 1952. They made their home in Mechanicsville where they raised their five children. Janie was more than a stay at home mom. She was the business manager of Grant’s trucking operation and her life revolved around raising her children and maintaining the household. She had to be many things to her children and she put her heart into all she did. In the later years of Grant’s trucking career, Janie enjoyed trucking with him and stopping along the way to enjoy life.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children Grant H. (Cindy) Armstrong, Jr. of Danbury, Mike (Diane) Armstrong of Oviedo, Fla., Judy (Tom) Strickler of Mechanicsville, Bill (Sandy) Armstrong of Mount Ayr, Sally (Garry) Worby of Solon, and special son Larry (Cynthis) Platner of Lisbon; 16 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; her sister Jo Ann (Ed) Dietz of Tipton; in-laws Ernie (Nancy) Albaugh, Jo (Jim) DeForest, and Mary Albaugh; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church on Nov. 2 with the Rev. Barbara Krueger officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
