IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High athletic director Scott Kibby announced last week that the United States Tennis Association named boys tennis coach Mitch Gross the 2013 Outstanding Iowa High School Coach.
Gross has guided his team to eight conference titles as well as four state championships in 2005, 2006, 2012 and 2013. In 2014 Gross will lead his squad in an attempt at becoming the first Class 2A team to win three-straight state titles. The 2014 campaign will be his 13th season with the Trojans, and Gross brings a 178-27 career record to the effort.
“I feel honored to have won this award,” Gross said. “A big piece of being successful is talent, and I have been very fortunate to have coached some very good players.”
Gross cites fostering an environment of high expectations and building strong relationships with his players as reasons for the success of the program. Prior to Gross’ arrival in 2001, the Trojans had finished with winning records in just two of the previous five seasons.
“It has been my pleasure to work with and watch coach Gross in his work with our tennis athletes,” said Kibby. “He has high expectations and works hard with his tennis squad, while at the same time he has built excellent team rapport and enjoys the time he spends working with our athletes.”
