MANCHESTER– Solon’s wrestlers split a double dual at Manchester last week and then placed second at a Highland tournament over the weekend.
The Spartans defeated Maquoketa, 51-27, and then fell to West Delaware by the same score Thursday, Jan. 9, at Manchester.
Louis Gnida, Trevor Nelson and Lance Evans remained undefeated in dual competition, according to head coach Brooks McLaren. Cole Fritz, Evans and Logan Linderbaum had pins against Maquoketa.
Evans, Gnida, Nelson and Danny Whitmore had pins against West Delaware.
“It was a strong win for (Danny) Whitmore against West Delaware,” McLaren said.
The team is 6-2 in duals.
The Spartans placed third at the Gary Curtis Wrestling Tournament at Highland Saturday.
Washington took the team championship with 185.5 points, with West Branch a solid second at 157 points. Solon nudged out Columbus by a point-and-a-half with 147.5 for third.
“Overall, good performances from the entire team,” said McLaren.
Fritz, Whitmore and Linderbaum placed second, while Gnida and Nelson placed third for the Spartans.
“It was very encouraging for Nick Bailey going 4-1 on the day,” McLaren said. “He had to forfeit the third place match because he had already wrestled five times.”
