IOWA CITY– “Tradition Never Graduates.” That phrase is seen multiple times in the 2014 Media Guide for the West High Women of Troy track and field program. Thumbing through the 20-plus page publication, one quickly sees why.
They’ve been the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) champions 11 years in a row, have nine regional championships since 1998 and are defending both titles this season. In addition, the program has six state champion titles to its credit, again since 1998. Last year, the Women of Troy were the ninth-place team at the conclusion of the state co-ed meet in Des Moines.
Another West High tradition is Mike Parker, now in his 17th season as the head coach for the girls track team as well as the girls cross-country program (19 years completed). “Since taking over the Iowa City West programs, he has been on a mission to build and maintain the kind of foundation that would assure that the Women of Troy consistently contend for conference, state and national honors every year.” the media guide said.
Again this season, Parker is joined by assistant coaches Peggy McGuire (15th season at West), Rachel West (fourth year with West), Danica Haight (third year with the program). Kim Humpal joins the program this season as the newest assistant coach.
Parker has experience returning to every event this season with 11 seniors and nine juniors on the roster. Ten sophomores and 19 freshmen round out the team.
