Tiffin Fire Assoc. meeting Jan. 16

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Fire Association will hold its annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 16, at the Tiffin Fire Station commencing at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will include the appointment of directors. Immediately following will be the regular meeting, including election of officers.

Council approves land purchase negotiations

Throttle Down to share frontage road with City Park

TIFFIN– At first, it will be a road to nowhere. But eventually there could be another entrance to City Park amenities, if the City of Tiffin moves forward with a potential land purchase.
At a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, Jan. 10, Tiffin City Council members discussed the acquisition of property near Throttle Down, 607 E. Marengo Rd., for a future frontage road off Highway 6.

Fire claims rural Tiffin mobile home

TIFFIN– A mobile home is a total loss after a fire broke out Sunday, Jan. 8, at 3153 Half Moon Ave. NW, just outside Tiffin.
The Tiffin Fire Department was called to the scene at 2:29 p.m., said Chief Brian Detert, and had the fire under control in about 45 minutes.
He said with help from the Oxford Fire Department, they were able to save a bedroom and part of the kitchen, but everything was ruined.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Johnson County Ambulance Service also assisted the fire departments.

The Depot Express coming to Liberty High area

Site plan approved for new convenience store

NORTH LIBERTY– Commuters visiting and returning from the southeast side of North Liberty will soon have another option for filling up the gas tank, and their stomachs.
At a meeting Dec. 13, members of the North Liberty City Council unanimously approved the site plan for The Depot Express, a 5,700-square-foot gas station and convenience store to be located at the northwest corner of Dubuque Street and North Liberty Road, directly west of Liberty High School.

West Delaware breaks Solon five-game win streak

First quarter proves to be difference

MANCHESTER– The Solon varsity boys broke a five-game winning streak with a 73-59 loss to undefeated West Delaware Jan. 6 in Manchester.
“West Delaware is a very tough venue to compete,” noted Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing.
Pershing said starting junior guard Luke Ira took an elbow to the eye 14 seconds into the game and remained out until the beginning of the second quarter.
“Losing Luke for the whole first quarter was pivotal,” he said.

Spartans first at Marshalltown tournament

MARSHALLTOWN– After a two-week hiatus from competition, the Solon varsity wrestlers are back to pinning.
And pinning. And pinning some more.
The Spartans have racked up 179 pins so far this season, 33 of them at the Allie Morrison Dual Tournament in Marshalltown last Saturday, Jan. 7.

Josie Durr scores 27 to help Solon defeat West Delaware, 47-42

SOLON– Solon senior Josie Durr made it happen.
The Lady Spartan varsity basketball team improved to 4-7 on the year with a dramatic, come-from-behind victory at home against West Delaware Jan. 6.
Solon pulled off a 47-42 win after trailing by seven points at half.
It was Durr who did most of the heavy lifting, putting in 20 of her 27 points in the second half while leading the team in steals with eight.
The Lady Spartans scored 34 points in the second half after scoring only 13 in the first.

David and Malinda Poduska and Ambrose, of Lowden, and George Bortz were among a group that spent Christmas Day in Williamsburg at the home of Robert and Nancy Welsh.
