Last Methodist football dinner Nov. 18

SOLON– A fixture in the community– Solon United Methodist Church “Football Dinners” on every home Saturday of the Hawkeyes’ regular football season– is coming to an end.
The Saturday, Nov. 18, home football Saturday for the Hawkeyes hosting Purdue will be the last, according to Tawnia Kakacek, co-chair of the program.
The church will be serving from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Take out orders are welcome. Call 624-2251.

Senior Conversations cancelled

SOLON– The Friday, Nov. 19, Senior Conversations at the Solon Public Library has been cancelled due to speaker scheduling conflicts. The December Conversation will be skipped and Senior Conversations will be scheduled again next year.

Venture Crew Can Drive Sunday, Nov. 26

SOLON– Are those cans and bottles from Thanksgiving pilling up? Let Solon Venture Crew 52 take care of them. Solon Venture Crew Can Drive is Sunday, Nov. 26, at St. Mary Catholic Church parking lot, from noon to 4 p.m. Venture Crew is a group of young adults, ages 14 to 21, who get together for meetings and go on venture filled trips.

Limits to Solon fireworks

Proposed ordinance would eliminate New Year’s displays

SOLON– Residents of Solon will have four days a year to shoot off fireworks.
At a Wednesday, Nov. 1, meeting, members of the Solon City Council unanimously approved the third and final reading of an ordinance limiting private fireworks displays to July 1-4.
State legislation, signed into law in early May, approved the sale, purchase and use of fireworks across the state.

Donate Trees for Xmas walk

SOLON– The Solon Old Gold Diner Site Council and the United Methodist Women and Men will be teaming up for a third annual Christmas Tree Walk Contest from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Solon Methodist Church Family Life Center.
Enter a tree or wreath selecting from the following categories: Originality, Traditional, Theme, Unusual, General.
There are no entry fees and families, businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate in the winter fundraiser, which will direct goodwill donations to community non-profits.

Free Thanksgiving Meal hosted by Our Lord’s Church Thursday, Nov. 23

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will serve a free Thanksgiving meal Thursday, Nov. 23. All are welcome. Reservations are not required but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, located at 131 N. Market St. in Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available. 25th annual firefighters dance Nov. 18

SOLON– The Solon firefighters host their 25th annual Firefighters Dance on Saturday, Nov. 18, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Solon American Legion.
This year’s featured band is the “Adam Keith Band” and raffle prizes will be given away throughout the night. The grand prize is an overnight stay at Riverside Hotel and Casino.
All proceeds from this year’s dance go to the Solon Firefighters Association. The association funds allow the department to purchase items not budgeted through taxation and to supplement projects, such as the department’s training facility.

Solon community center progressing

Middle School may soon be open for public use.

SOLON– Within a few months, portions of the former Solon Middle School may be open for public use.
Solon city and school officials have been working behind the scenes to investigate a collaboration which may eventually offer residents something they haven’t had before– a community center.
“The public is extremely eager to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Solon City Council member Lauren Whitehead.
The Solon Community School District (SCSD) has committed to maintaining ownership of the building, and will continue to utilize the oldest portion for administrative offices.

Strong Hawkeye defense

The Iowa women started the weekend off Friday night with a victory that gave head coach Lisa Bluder her 700th win.
The Hawkeyes beat Quinnipiac, 83-67, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter to break open a close game.
The Bobcats made it to the Sweet 16 last year and had four starters back.
The Hawks had four players in double figures, led by Megan Gustafson with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Kathleen Doyle and Tania Davis combined for 30 points, four assists and only three turnovers.

Big win over Alabama State

Hawk Talk

Iowa opened the season Friday night with a 96-62 win over Chicago State.
Six players in double figures, 23 assists, seven blocked shots and only seven turnovers.
The Hawks shot 54.5 percent from 3-point range and had five more rebounds.
Jordan Bohannon had six assists, no turnovers and 12 points.
The twin towers (Luka Garza and Jack Nunge) combined for 26 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
Luka played 18 minutes, Jack 19. Luka was named Big Ten Freshman of the week.
Everyone played, so Fran McCaffery got to see a lot of different combinations.
