July 20th

Over 15k attend Blues & BBQ

A new look

NORTH LIBERTY– It was a year of firsts for the highly anticipated North Liberty Blues & BBQ, an annual food and music festival occurring the first Saturday in July.
In its 11th year, the event is still being perfected by its organizing committee to make the day accessible and enjoyable for all.

Council members abort pilot transit program

Intracity service to run through August

NORTH LIBERTY– A poorly patronized North Liberty bus route will make its last stop next month– less than a year after it was launched.
At its July 11 meeting, the North Liberty City Council unanimously voted to end the pilot transit program effective Sept. 1. The decision essentially nullifies a contract with Johnson County, which enabled the city to use a SEATS (Special Needs and Elderly Assisted Transportation System) bus and driver since last fall.
“I think conceptually this is a great service,” said council member Annie Pollock. “I think we’ve given great effort toward it.”

Spartans roll Mustangs in substate opener

Solon Economist
SOLON– Conventional wisdom among sports writers, fans and coaches postulates that it is all but impossible to beat a team three times in one season. The Solon Spartans varsity baseball team proved it is possible with a 6-1 win over the Mount Vernon Mustangs Friday, July 14, at home in a Class 3A Substate 4 District 8 semifinal.
Solon went up on the scoreboard early with a run in the top of the second inning for a 1-0 lead. The Spartans added a run in the fourth when Luke Ira was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and a runner trotted home for a 2-0 score.

Four Lady Spartans earned First Team Honors in the East Division, with two more on the Second Team and two receiving Honorable Mention.

Campers may expect to learn and apply skills applicable to football. Coaches will spend time teaching the fundamental techniques essential to player development in the Spartan program. Campers will play lead up games and participate in various competitions.

Ira homer, Zach Wegmann single provide Solon power

SOLON– “It’s a long game,” Solon head coach Keith McSweeney reminded his players in the dugout.
It was two innings into a Class 3A District 8 baseball final and the Spartans were already down 4-0 to Central DeWitt. The Sabers had knocked around Solon starter Luke Ira and Central DeWitt sophomore Garrett Finley had not allowed a base runner through three innings.

Banding together

OXFORD– Bird nerds– they’re everywhere.
According to a 2011 survey by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, over 46 million Americans enjoy bird watching. Twenty-two percent of Iowans over the age of 16 are birders. And Johnson County is host to a thriving intergenerational and growing birding community.
Sophia Davis, who recently finished eighth grade at Northwest Junior High, was a member of the Iowa City Bird Club for four years.
