With 120th Street done, what’s next?

SHUEYVILLE– “It’s nearly complete,” said Dave Schechinger of Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. about the 120th Street reconstruction project through Shueyville. Schechinger’s comments came during the Tuesday, Oct. 9, city council meeting, a joint meeting held with the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.
Supervisors Pat Harney, Rod Sullivan, Sally Stutsman, Janelle Rettig and Terrance Neuzil met with the council to learn first hand what issues are prevalent in the community.

Solon’s first Habitat house becomes a home

SOLON– “You know, think what this lot looked like, even six months ago,” said Pastor Carol Kress of the Solon United Methodist Church. “Pretty darn amazing.”
Kress, Pastor Dennis Arnold of Our Lord’s Church and Father Jim Vrba of St. Mary Catholic Church led the blessing of the new Solon Habitat for Humanity house. The Dubuque Street house was dedicated Tuesday, Oct. 23, and the keys were ceremoniously presented to the new owners, Kurt and Vicki Shover, and their son Chanse.

Turkey to Table for Solon families

SOLON– The Solon Community Pantry is organizing a “Turkey to Table,” ready-to-cook Thanksgiving dinner to be delivered to area families who might not otherwise have a Thanksgiving meal.
Families who are unable to attend Our Lord’s Church free Thanksgiving meal may call 319-430-8655 or 319-333-5037 to arrange for a meal that will contain a frozen 8-10 pound turkey or larger plus all the fixings for a holiday meal. The meals will be delivered to homes Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Solon Legion turkey dinner Nov. 4

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will be hosting a turkey dinner on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The dinner will include favorites like turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, cranberry sauce, rye bread, homemade dessert and coffee and milk. Adult tickets are $9 and children six through 12 are $5. Children under five are free.

Black Angel: fusing history with mystery

IOWA CITY– She reigns silently over a set of graves in the midst of an Iowa City cemetery. She is both alluring and formidable, dreaded and loved, world-renowned and yet forever shrouded in dark mystery.
The Black Angel of Iowa City’s Oakland Cemetery is now the subject of an artistic collaboration between past Solon High School graduates Travis Drahozal and Jordan Kessler.
Like Iowa City’s notable urban legend, the pair’s “Black Angel Movie” is also a study in contrasts. Part documentary and part horror movie, Drahozal said the Black Angel was a perfect subject for this latest venture.

Solon American Legion Boys’ State Project nearing completion

SOLON– The Solon American Legion is searching for boys sponsored by the legion who attended Boys’ State at Camp Dodge during their junior year of high school. A board in the shape of Iowa has been donated by Jack Neuzil to the legion for the purpose of recognizing the Stinocher Post’s Boys’ Staters. Names of Boys’ Staters and the year they attended will be added to the board and it will be displayed at the Solon Legion.

Solon Community Pantry needs items

Early out movie, Thursday, Nov. 1

The next early out program will be on Thursday, Nov. 1, with the showing of the movie, “Pirates: Band of Misfits” (PG) which is 88 minutes long. Movie time will be from 1 until 3 p.m.
Movies are shown in the meeting room and most attendees prefer to sit on the floor. The library does have a few bean bag chairs but not enough for everyone. Kids are more than welcome to bring in pillows or comfy seat-like things of their own for early out movies.
