4 decades of family feed

2nd generation helps chart future of Solon Feed Mill

By Janet Nolte
Solon Economist
SOLON– When Charles Searles heard in 1978 that Elmer Ponsar had decided to put his Solon mill and feed business up for sale, he called his daughter Shelley and her husband of two years, Frank Kuennen.
Shelley and Frank were at a crossroads. Shelley, a remedial reading teacher, learned she was out of a job due to cutbacks in the Title I program. Frank was considering either going back to college or, true to his upbringing on a dairy farm in Fayette county, returning to some kind of work in agriculture.

Macbride alcohol ban takes legislative twist

Administrative rules committee sends amendment to legislature

DES MOINES– It’s up to the Iowa Legislature now.
The implementation of an alcohol ban at Lake Macbride State Park’s beach was delayed by a legislative review committee, and the Iowa House and Senate will have their chance to fix the problem.
A ban on “alcoholic liquor, beer, and wine” from beaches at Lake Macbride State Park and Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area in Linn County was approved by the Iowa Natural Resources Commission at an Aug. 11 meeting and the amended rule was to go into effect Wednesday, Oct. 5.

OH NO! NDSU takes down Iowa, 23-21

Hawk Talk

All week long the media, the Hawkeye players and coaches said North Dakota State University (NDSU) reminded them of a Big Ten team.
The Bison have won five straight FCS championships and boy, did they look like a Big Ten team last Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
They were physical, pounded the ball on the ground, had a quarterback that could make plays with his feet and shut down Iowa’s running attack.
Did I think the Bison would win?

Skinny dipping with the devil

walkin'

For proof of God’s existence, I need only to look into the waters of the pond we dug on our land near Solon.
Last fall, the spot was an ugly 15-foot (at its deepest), 3/4-acre hole in the ground.
Then it rained, and rained again, in the spring. By the end of March, it filled up. By the end of April, I began seeing frogs and turtles. It wasn’t just a few, but an entire legion of the critters, especially the frogs.

A special teacher

Foot For Thought

I think second grade was the best year of my elementary school career. To my mind, Miss McDowel was the best teacher in the school. Every year, my uncles asked me the same two questions about school: Did I have a boyfriend? And, was my teacher pretty?
