Boy Scout Troop 216 to host chili supper Feb. 6

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 36th annual Chili Supper from 4:30-7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5 and children five and under are admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional Scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop’s primary annual fundraising event with the proceeds assisting in covering the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop’s 30 Scouts.

Tiffin Fire Association annual meeting Jan. 18

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Fire Association will hold its annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 18, at the Tiffin Fire Station commencing at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will include the appointment of directors. Immediately following will be the regular meeting including election of officers.

UI DeGowin Blood Center to host Jan. 7 blood drive in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– The UI DeGowin Blood Center will host a blood drive Thursday, Jan. 7, from 3:30-7:30 p.m. in the North Liberty Recreation Center. To schedule an appointment to donate blood at this blood drive, please call 319-356-2058 with an appointment time, or sign up online at www.uihealthcare.org/bloodcenter. All successful donors will receive a DeGowin Lunch Bag.

Man falls through ice at wildlife area

NORTH LIBERTY– On Dec. 31, at 10:38 a.m., the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call from a lone hunter who had fallen through the ice. He was partially submerged in the water, stuck in the ice and unable to move. The location given was in the Hawkeye Wildlife area north of Swan Lake Rd and East of Greencastle Ave. After a brief search, the subject was located in a secluded area of the wetlands approximately one half mile east of Greencastle Ave. He was pulled from the water by personnel donning cold water rescue suits.

Johnson County Supervisor Terrence Neuzil leaves Iowa for Kalamazoo County

IOWA CITY– Last month, Johnson County bid farewell to one of the area’s most well-known citizens.
Terrence Neuzil served on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors for 15 years. He resigned his position to take a job as the County Administrator of Kalamazoo County, Mich.
Dec. 20 was Neuzil’s last day serving his hometown constituents.

Solon Duals title goes to Spartans

Wrestlers run the table at dual tournament Jan. 2

SOLON– The Spartan varsity wrestlers hosted the Solon Duals Saturday, Jan. 2, and came away with the title.
Solon took first place, with Interstate 35, Keokuk, PCM (Prairie City Monroe), Davenport Central and Muscatine rounding out the results.
The Spartans notched 33 pins over the course of five rounds.
“I was very pleased with our effort throughout the day,” said head coach Blake Williams. “The guys showed a lot of fight, which is what we look for every time out on the mat. It was definitely a great team effort.”

Optimist Club to sponsor Oratorical Contest for students under age 18

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon is encouraging area students to speak their minds about the topic, “How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others,” as part of the Optimist International Oratorical Contest for the 2015-16 year.

Wilson’s Orchard receives USDA Value-Added grant

Nine iowa businesses awarded $1.2 million to help develop new products, expand sales

DES MOINES– Rural Development Deputy Under Secretary Vernita F. Dore in November highlighted the importance of rural entrepreneurs to the U.S. economy and announced that the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing nearly $34 million to help 258 businesses nationwide. The funding comes from USDA Rural Development’s Value-Added Producer Grant program (VAPG).
Fox Ridge Farm, Inc. (doing business as Wilson’s Orchard) of Solon received $160,000 in grant funds which will be used to help develop new markets and grow sales.
