NL Optimists assists families

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s a gift that keeps on giving.
Each year, Optimist Club of North Liberty members donate food to the North Liberty Family Resource Center (FRC), to be distributed to local families. This is the eighth year of the program.
It’s a way to help families stretch food budgets over the holidays, when children are home from school and away from the regular school lunch schedule.

Going for the blue in 2012

NORTH LIBERTY– Making a New Year’s resolution is one thing.
Making a public, three-year commitment to help make the entire community healthier, happier and stronger is another thing all together. But that is exactly what North Liberty is prepared to do this coming new year.
North Liberty is collaborating with the cities of Iowa City and Coralville to submit an application to earn Blue Zones designation, part of Iowa’s Healthiest State initiative.
The cities are now asking citizens to learn what Blue Zones is about and demonstrate their support with an online pledge.
What is Blue Zones?

More is definitely more

NORTH LIBERTY– In the case of new North Liberty business Mail-Print & More, the name really does say it all.
Located in the just-finished business park in Liberty Centre, at 650 W. Cherry St., Mail-Print & More is ready to handle the community’s mailing and shipping needs, printing and copying jobs, and even helping find that last minute gift.
Marissa Reed’s new business was born of previous business experience, inspiration for the future and, ultimately, a genuine, regular old need.
Her computer’s printer ran out of ink.

Chrome domes for a cure

IOWA CITY— North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin is wearing his hair a little shorter these days. Actually, he’s not wearing his hair at all, and is braving these early winter days with a freshly shaven head.
Losing his locks, however, could help lead to a cure for kids with cancer.

IOWA CITY– Roosevelt Elementary, the school that will close at the end of the year, was one subject of board member Jeff McGinness’ list of goals for a facilities committee meeting. His other concern was a new high school for the district to ease an overcrowded West High.
The board discussed forgoing the sale of the school property through a realtor and instead putting the Roosevelt property through a competitive bid process.
