Solon boys miss cut for state cross country

ANAMOSA– For Solon’s Patrick McGill, it was a matter of a couple steps.
At the Oct. 18 district cross country meet, five runners already had finished. Only the first 10 automatically qualify for the state meet. Heading into the finish line chute, McGill was knotted up in a group of six, fighting for the next five spots. “It was close over the last 800 (meters). I passed him (Jack Murray of Clear Creek-Amana) about 30 feet before he passed me,” recalled McGill minutes after the race. “We were neck and neck. It was a pretty solid race.”

Spartans KO Bobcats; Crestwood next

SOLON– It was just what Solon needed going into the playoffs.
The Spartan varsity football team ran a continuous clock for a quick finish against visiting Benton Community, 63-0, to cap off the regular season Friday evening.

To state: Girls look for great finish

ANAMOSA– The setting is similar, as Solon takes aim at the 2012 Girls Cross Country State Meet Saturday at Fort Dodge. The team leader board is juggled a little, over last year’s team and individual finishes. However, a veteran Spartan lineup knows what to do; to improve on last year’s– and 2010’s– fourth place finish.
And they remember that only the top three teams are invited out on the deck overlooking the crowd to receive their trophies.

ICCSD to schedule February 2013 vote

IOWA CITY– Iowa City schools will edit their revenue purpose statement (RPS) and put it to a February 2013 district-wide ballot asking for the authority to borrow up to $100 million in future (up to year 2029) sales tax revenues.
The latest measure comes after plans for a north side high school had been all but shelved in September after a district study showed the $30 million set aside for another high school would fall short of projected costs.

With 120th done, what’s next?

North Liberty Leader
SHUEYVILLE– “It’s nearly complete,” said Dave Schechinger of Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. about the 120th Street reconstruction project through Shueyville. Schechinger’s comments came during the Tuesday, Oct. 9, city council meeting, a joint meeting held with the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.
Supervisors Pat Harney, Rod Sullivan, Sally Stutsman, Janelle Rettig and Terrance Neuzil met with the council to learn first hand what issues are prevalent in the community.

‘Comedy for Charity’ for ERO to be held Nov. 11

IOWA CITY– Nathan Timmel’s Fourth Annual “Comedy for Charity” will take place on Nov. 11 at the Mill in Iowa City at 6:30 p.m. Every year since its inception, “Comedy for Charity” has selected a worthy charity to receive all of the event’s proceeds, which go directly to the chosen charity. Last year almost $6,000 was raised for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to combating pediatric cancer.

Community Center south entrance now closed

NORTH LIBERTY– As the expansion on the North Liberty Community Library continues, crews advise patrons to use the north entrance starting Monday, Oct. 22. The front door, also known as the south entrance, will be closed for at least five weeks in order to continue construction on the building. Though the community center will still be open during regular business hours, guests should enter through the back door. Overall, the project is slated to be complete some time in 2013.
