Trojans trounce Little Hawks on the mat

IOWA CITY– The West vs. City High rivalry took to the wrestling mat Thursday night at West High as the Trojans easily handled the east-siders 69-6 in varsity action.
Tristen Bowers, Kegan Wakefield, Tyler Hebl, John Milani, Jackson Voigt, Donovan Doyle, Colin Foerstner, Jakeb Bakken and Chris Walters all won by fall.

Cougars claw bowling Trojans

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars swept the Iowa City West Trojans Thursday evening at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center. The Kennedy boys won 2,703 to 2,535 while the Kennedy girls won 2,445 to 2,182.
Heath Schintler and Katelyn Kelly led the Trojans with 341 and 339 pins respectively.
West High is in action again Friday, Jan. 25 at home at Colonial Lanes in Iowa City against Dubuque Senior with a 3:15 p.m. start time.

Youth baseball and softball registration has begun

NORTH LIBERTY– Registration for the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) 2013 season is fast approaching. Sign up your child(ren) at www.eteamz.com/NLYBS by Feb. 25. Save $5 per child by registering online before Feb. 15. Paper forms are also available at the North Liberty Recreation Center and at the NLYBS website. Swisher Legion ‘Chili Cook Off’ to be held Super Bowl Sunday

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will hold a “Chili Cook Off” on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, which is also Super Bowl Sunday. Entry fee is $5 which includes participant’s all-you-can-eat chili. Entries must be to the Swisher American Legion by 2 p.m. with no exceptions.
One entry per person, which must be one crock-pot per entry.
Prizes: First place: $100; second place: $50; third place $25.
After the judging, everyone is welcome to $5 all-you-can-eat chili.
Mix up your best batch of chili and let the judging begin.

‘Black Gowns and Bowties’ benefit at CCA Jan. 26

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Jan. 26, Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) fine arts boosters, F.A.M.E., will sponsor a benefit concert and silent auction event. “Black Gowns and Bowties” will take place in the CCA High School Performing Arts Center. Proceeds will be used to purchase concert attire for the high school band and choir.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. in the commons area with a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and piano music by Lynn Conway and friends.

Troop 216 to host chili supper

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 33rd annual chili supper from 4:30 until 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop’s primary annual fundraising event. Proceeds help cover the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop’s approximately 30 scouts.

Tiffin Fire Association annual meeting Jan. 21

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Fire Association will hold its annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Tiffin Fire Station. The meeting will include appointment of directors. Immediately following will be the regular meeting including election of officers.

Grace to offer free “Perspectives 2013” night on Jan. 20

NORTH LIBERTY– The opening night of the Iowa City area Perspectives course is Sunday, Jan. 20. It is open to everyone free of charge. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. and the program is from 6 until 9 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 2707 Dubuque St. NE, North Liberty.
Perspectives is a multi-denominational, 15-week course that explores the Biblical, historical and cultural impact of the world Christian movement. Dynamic professors, Bible scholars and global thinkers from across the U.S. teach the lessons. Over 17 local area churches were represented by students in the 2012 class.

Cities feel squeeze of 2011 tax law

Change in commercial assessments bites into city’s general fund

NORTH LIBERTY– An amendment passed by the Iowa legislature 18 months ago is now beginning to squeeze city budgets.
North Liberty City Administrator Ryan Heiar told the North Liberty City Council last Tuesday, Jan. 8, that the city will collect less in property taxes for the general fund than anticipated in 2013-2014.
About $150,000 less, in fact.

Villagrana’s free throws lift boys at Beckman

SOLON– The Solon Spartans received a good growing experience courtesy of Dyersville Beckman Friday night.
Solon came out of Dyersville with a slim 57-55 win thanks to a pair of free throws by Solon point guard Emilio Villagrana.
“It was a very hard-fought, extremely physical game,” said head coach Brad Randall of the win. “You come out of there with a win, and you’ve really done something.”
