A blowout for The Boot

IOWA CITY– The West High varsity football juggernaut continued on its winning way Friday night, rolling over rival City High 44-0 in the annual Battle for The Boot.
The win returned the bronzed boot traveling trophy to the Trojan’s trophy case for the first time in eight years. The significance of a perfect 7-0 (4-0 in the MVC Mississippi Division) record, defeating their rival and bringing home The Boot was not lost on the players, coaches or fans.
“It’s hard for me to even put into words,” said coach Brian Sauser, a man rarely at a loss for words.

Westward spike

IOWA CITY– Conventional wisdom suggested Tuesday night’s battle between West High and crosstown rival City High would be an epic confrontation, likely to go to five games. With West up 20-9 and ahead 2-0 in the third match, conventional wisdom was seen slipping out the side door. The Women of Troy went on to take the third set, keeping The Spike, the traveling trophy the teams fight for each year. West has had it 17 times to City’s 14 and won it last year as well.

Punishing the Raiders

TIFFIN– The up-and-down season for Clear Creek Amana’s football Clippers continued Friday night as the Anamosa Blue Raiders came to town on Senior Night. Following a 30-14 loss the week before to Central DeWitt, Rodney Walls’ crew was hungry for a win.
The Clippers took command in the pivotal fourth quarter for a 31-13 win.

CCA’s Facilities Study Committee organizes

OXFORD– Determining the next, best thing for students? That’s a task for the members of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district’s Facilities Study Committee. Around 25 committee members, faculty and staff met Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the elementary school in Oxford for an organizational meeting.
The district is continuing to face increased enrollment and a resulting lack of space, leading to the potential need to expand existing facilities or even build new. The board approved a committee to explore the district’s needs and make recommendations to address them.

Food For Thought

It was quite a few years ago, when Sandra Lawrence was principal at Lakeview Elementary in Solon, that a sign appeared on the wall of the teacher’s lounge. I assumed that Sandra was responsible for the sign, but nobody ever said for sure. It was only about the size of a sheet of typing paper, and it said simply, “Happiness is a conscious decision, not just a reaction to circumstances.”

Walkin'

While I joke (and exaggerate a little) about Sabra incessantly taking photos while on our rides, we are fairly compatible on the bicycle trail. If the surface allows, I ride on the right with her a half bicycle length ahead on the left. This allows her to set the pace– she sets a good one– and for me to hear with my left ear, the one that works, a little. This formation also facilitates emergency photo opportunities, which can come at any moment. I never know when that woman will clamp down on her brakes to take a photo– of moss, say– so it’s best not to be directly behind her.
