Survivor Gideon Frieder defines Holocaust for Solon students

SOLON– “My generation is dying,” Gideon Frieder said to the Solon students gathered in the middle school auditorium. “Twenty years from now, you will have no opportunity to talk to a Holocaust survivor. We will all be dead.”

SHUTDOWN

Hawk Talk

Iowa blanks Illinois, 28-0

I thought the Hawks might be a little flat after an emotional loss at Penn State and then an emotional win against Michigan at Kinnick Stadium.
Two straight night games, two completely different results, and then you have an 11 a.m. game with Illinois, which came into the contest 3-7.
Against Michigan, a safety by Jaleel Johnson got the Hawks on the scoreboard first after trailing 10-0.
Last Saturday, it was Riley McCarron breaking open a scoreless tie returning an Illinois punt for a 55-yard score with 4:33 left in the first half.

Corps managed lands are open for hunting in designated areas at Coralville Lake. A day in the life of a small town

Walkin'

Ran into Bob Jedlicka in Solon the other day.
Bob served as the city superintendent during the 1980s and ‘90s while I lived there, ran the newspaper and sat on the city council. “
A barrel-chested man, his knees began giving out on him years ago. As a result, he doesn’t so much walk as rock like a washing machine with an uneven load. His large chest also serves as an echo chamber. A man of few words, the ones he does speak echo long and deep before erupting from his mouth.

Nature’s way

It’s been a few weeks since I witnessed the episode I’m about to describe, but I’ve been more or less haunted by it ever since. The window over my desk, where I spend a lot of time writing and daydreaming, looks out at a row of walnut trees along our lane. There are two constants in the scene, for the most part. One is there are birds visiting the lane to peck at the gravel for the grit that is necessary for their gizzards to function.

Unique crafting nets multiple wins for Swisher distillery

By Chris Umscheid

SWISHER– About a year ago, Cedar Ridge Winery and Distillery started entering their more-aged products into prestigious contests in order to build credibility with the brand.
“We came into 2016 hoping to get four gold medals in international competitions,” Cedar Ridge owner Jeff Quint said. “As of last week (week of Oct. 3) we had earned 11, and we still have one competition left. The results this year have been very solid, very overwhelming for us.”

2016-2017 Iowa City West High boys basketball preview:

Good chemistry to fuel the Trojan basketball machine

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– At first glance, looking over a preseason media questionnaire from Iowa City West High coach Steve Bergman, one might think it could be a tough year for the Trojan varsity basketball team. Ten seniors graduated from the 2016 Class 4A state runner-up team that went 21-5 overall and 14-2 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC).

2016-2017 Iowa City West High wrestling preview: A mixed bag of experience for West’s wrestlers

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– It’s the 18th year leading the Iowa City West High wrestling program for coach Mark Reiland, and he’s taking things in stride with a business-as-usual approach.
Reiland’s assessment of the season is simple: “Typical year where most of the same teams will be in the hunt again this year.”
The Trojans finished the 2015-16 season with a 15-14 record overall and a 5-4 showing in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC).
