It has been said that necessity is the mother of invention. I rather suspect that the invention quite often comes first and then, through fate, fad, or fashion, it becomes elevated to the status of a necessity.

Youth flag football deadline Aug. 14

CORALVILLE– Kids must be signed up for youth flag football by the Aug. 14 registration deadline. Flag football is open to children in grades 1-5 and runs Sept. 11 through Oct. 23. Games are played Sundays between 12-4 p.m. (exact times depend on the teams) at the Youth Sports Park, 2480 Depster Dr. in Coralville.
The fee for residents is $40 and $50 for non-residents. There is a late fee of $5 after Aug. 14. A mandatory coaches meeting will take place Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. at the North Liberty Recreation Center

Donor Dash 5K Fun Run and Walk Aug. 20 at North Bend Elementary

NORTH LIBERTY– Iowa Donor Network’s first annual Donor Dash 5K Fun Run and Walk honors those who have given the gift of life, celebrates the lives of organ and tissue recipients and recognizes those who continue to wait for a lifesaving transplant.

North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball Fall Ball registration open

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) will partner with Diamond Dreams Baseball and Softball Sports Academy of Coralville during the sixth season of Fall Fun Ball. Diamond Dream trainers will work with boys and girls in first through eighth grades during the 2016-2017 school year. The season will consist of five sessions on Monday nights, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. or until dark, beginning Aug. 29 and skipping Sept. 5, Labor Day. The season will end on Oct. 3, unless there is a rainout and then the last night will be Oct. 10.

Trojans’ luck runs out

Prairie hands West its fifth state runner-up trophy

DES MOINES– The West High Trojans entered the 2016 Class 4A State Baseball Tournament as the No. 2 seed and with hopes of earning their first championship in the school’s 11th appearance in Des Moines.
However, a six-run inning by the Hawks of Cedar Rapids Prairie in the title game dashed those hopes and led to West’s third consecutive runner-up trophy and its fifth overall since 2009.

Statewide average rainfall almost twice the normal average

DES MOINES—Recent rains improved groundwater levels across Iowa, while the National Drought Monitor shows about a third of the state is still rated as abnormally dry. Heavy rains fell on July 19 will be reflected in the next update.
Substantial rainfall during July improved shallow groundwater conditions in central Iowa and most of southeast Iowa from slight drought to normal. A small region of southeast Iowa continues to be in slight drought conditions. Shallow groundwater levels in most of northwest, southwest and northeast Iowa continue to be above normal for July.

School supply drive by Swisher American Legion Auxiliary Juniors at Fun Days

SWISHER– Swisher American Legion Auxiliary Juniors will start a back to school supply drive for veterans’ families with a parade in the Swisher Fun Days parade.
The float in the Swisher Fun Days parade will kick off a school supply drive. Donations of any and all school supplies, including monetary donations, may be dropped off at the following Swisher businesses: Kava House, Shooters, Shelton’s Grocery, Swisher Trust and Savings Bank and Carrie’s Creations. Donations will be collected Aug. 8-13.
All donations will provide for veterans’ families in need.

Ely Fall Fest and Classic Car Show Sept. 16-18

6-18. The weekend festival begins Friday night with a Moonlight 5k and 1 mile run at 7:45 pm, followed with a community celebration. Saturday is an all-day festival featuring over 20 activities and events, including kids’ inflatables and games, an adult co-ed softball tournament, a cornhole tournament, pet parade, youth punt/pass/kick competition, magic show, wiener dog race, and live music throughout the day. The day is capped off with a fireworks display at dusk. Sunday is fully devoted to the Classic Car Show, 8 a.m. to 3:30 pm.

Learn about blooming prairie plants at Kent Park Aug. 10

OXFORD– Enjoy a beautiful summer evening by heading outdoors in search of blooming prairie plants at the Knight Prairie Pavilion in Kent Park. The prairie walk will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. Johnson County Conservation (JCC) staff will lead a leisurely hike and provide interesting information and identification tips for prairie plants.

Iowa Raptor Project Family Day Aug. 6 at Macbride Nature Rec Area

MACBRIDE– The Iowa Raptor Project (IRP) invites community members to enjoy the next Family Day and featured raptor– the Harris’s Hawk– Saturday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area.
Families can visit Saguaro, the IRP’s Harris’s Hawk, and discover how the raptor species cooperatively attends nests and hunts as a team, making it the most social North American raptor. There will be teambuilding and hunting games, as well as arts and crafts in the Raptor’s Next.
