Construction to begin on Hwy. 965 bridge

Project commences Tuesday, Sept. 6 on Iowa River bridge crossing

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, bridge deck replacement on the Highway 965 bridge over the Iowa River will begin at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Construction should be complete by the end of November 2016. Cramer and Associates, of Grimes, will be the prime contractor. VJ Engineering, of Coralville, will provide construction oversight.

North Liberty Treasure Hunt supports community fund

NORTH LIBERTY– A treasure hunt, with a grand prize of four tickets to the Oct. 1 Iowa Hawkeyes’ football game versus Northwestern, is set to help raise funds and awareness of the North Liberty Community Fund (NLCF).
Entry fees for the Grow Our Community Treasure Hunt are $25. Participants will visit local businesses to collect stamps on a Community Fund card, from Sept. 2 to 11, and then submit completed cards for a chance to win the prize drawing. To sign up and get your card with the first business stamp, visit Great Western Bank in North Liberty on Sept. 2.

TIFFIN– Something big is coming to Tiffin.
In a special city council meeting Wednesday, Aug. 10, a Coralville developer presented a 265-acre land use plan for the most northeastern part of the fast-growing city. The development, which will connect seamlessly to the forthcoming Forevergreen Road interchange, is chock full of mixed-used housing, single-family residences, and nearly 100 acres of commercial opportunity.

Girls fourth, boys ninth at Bob Brown Invitational

Nicol, Smith pace Solon cross country teams

IOWA CITY– Mild weather and a mostly flat course made for good meet conditions Sept. 1, and Solon cross country runners responded with better times, and better contact with teammates while on the run, at the Bob Brown Invitational at Kicker’s Soccer Park, in Iowa City.
Solon’s boys finished ninth in their 12 team field. The girls were fourth, with nine full teams fielded.

Spartans take their lumps

IOWA CITY– The winless, but still-No. 1 ranked Regina Regals rolled onto their home field on Friday, Sept. 2, to exact some revenge for their week-one loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier. When the dust cleared, the Solon Spartans were left in a swirling loess behind the Regals, 34-0.

Water restrictions lifted

An employee of Central Tank Coatings, Inc. of Elgin, paints an orange stripe around the Solon water tower Thursday, Sept. 1. The Solon City Council approved an additional $9,800 in cost for the tower painting to add the Solon Community School District Spartan logo to the west side (and add the stripes). The extra money was covered by the Solon Area Commuity Foundation ($5,000), the Solon Beef Days Committee ($4,000) and the Optimist Club of Solon ($1,000).

NL man charged after woman injured Sunday on Coralville Res.

IOWA CITY– An Illinois woman was injured Sunday, Sept. 4, when two jet skis collided on Coralville Reservoir shortly after 2 p.m.
The collision occurred when a jet ski operated by Matthew Radueshel, 22, of North Liberty, was following a jet ski being operated by Cory Bettis, 30, of Shaumburg, Illinois. The two jet skis collided as they were beginning to turn.

Solon Dance Team to sell gently used uniforms this month

SOLON– The Solon Dance Team is cleaning its closet and is selling gently used uniforms and props. Items would be great for Homecoming Spirit Week, Halloween or even for a kid’s pretend/dress up closet. Lots of colors and sizes are available, reasonably priced. Stop by the table at the Sept. 9 football game or after school Sept. 12-16, from 3:15-4 p.m., in the high school commons. Solon Dance Team collecting coupons for troops

SOLON– The Solon Varsity Dance Team is collecting manufacturer’s coupons for troops overseas. In the past eight years with the community’s help, the team has sent more than $38,000 in manufacturer’s coupons. The first packet went to a naval base in Japan with almost $1,450 value in coupons to be used at the base’s commissary/grocery store. For those wishing to donate, coupons may be dropped off to Marjorie Lane at the high school, or call 319-624-3401, ext. 1116, or email mlane@solon.k12.ia.us to schedule a pick up.
