Local basketball program a slam-dunk

NORTH LIBERTY– When players in the Prime Time basketball league take the gym floor at the North Liberty Community Recreation Center, fans see splendid athletes, well-versed in ball handling and shooting, putting up impressive shots and making remarkable plays.
They may not see the years of hard work behind it all.
Two of the league’s better-known players, Duez Henderson and Jason Price, have made the hard work their business.


A bump in the road: CCA road and trail project stalls over misinterpretation

OXFORD — Shawn Lueth and Jon Fitch of Shive-Hattery presented a preliminary proposal for throughways at the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Tiffin campus during the regular monthly meeting on Dec. 16.
However, it was neither what Board President Tim Hennes wanted, nor had expected.


Court decision does not further annexation resolution for Coralville, North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– The state’s City Development Board, in its regular meeting Wednesday, Dec. 16, considered the latest ruling in the competing Coralville and North Liberty annexation proposals, now disputed for over three years.
And it doesn’t look as if a resolution will be forthcoming soon.


H1N1 vaccine providers open eligibility

IOWA CITY– As of Monday, Dec. 14, the Iowa Department of Public Health opened eligibility for 2009 H1N1 vaccinations to all persons and not just those in the priority groups. While everyone is now eligible and all are encouraged to get a 2009 H1N1 vaccination, Johnson County Public Health officials stress the importance of those in the priority groups to get vaccinated. A third wave of the H1N1 pandemic is expected and those persons most vulnerable to severe complications due to influenza need to be protected.


Leonard Dale Krotz

Leonard Dale Krotz, 80, of Solon, died on Dec. 15, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City of a sudden illness. Funeral mass was held on Friday, Dec. 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation was held Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, where there was a 6:30 p.m. vigil. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.


Mary Elizabeth McNamara Soukup

In this season of Advent holding her rosary and prayer shawl, Mary Elizabeth McNamara Soukup, 92, entered eternal life on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, surrounded by the love of her family and friends in her home. Funeral mass was Saturday, Dec. 19, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus and the Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation was Friday, Dec. 18, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services and before the service on Saturday.


Thomas R. Prochaska

Thomas R. Prochaska, 64, of Dubuque, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at home. Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 14, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation was Sunday, Dec. 13, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Dubuque.


Marguerite Susan Ludvicek

Marguerite Susan Ludvicek went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, following a brief illness. She will be missed by her six children, seven grandchildren, and anyone else who had the blessing to have known her.
Her celebration of life was Thursday, Dec. 17, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed in Castek Cemetery, near Swisher. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Karen J. Kleese

Karen J. Kleese, 70, of Washington, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a sudden illness.
Celebration of life services were held Monday, Dec. 21, at the United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Visitation was Sunday, Dec. 20, at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home. Interment was at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the United Presbyterian Church in Washington or the Central Park Senior Center. Prince Hudson Jr.

Prince Hudson Jr., 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009. Memorial service was Monday, Dec. 14, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Del Bear. Entombment was in Linwood Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Donna; his daughter, Cynthia Sue (Wendell) Gould of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Jared David (Jessica) Gould of Palo; two sisters, Viola Coffelt of Perryville, Mo., and Edna Seeman of Cedar Rapids; and his nephew, Jerry (Janet) Happel of North Liberty.
