Food for Thought

One of my sisters and I were reminiscing over some old photos of family picnics and other excursions. (We never actually had family vacations as such except for one memorable occasion when we visited Melen, Wis., where both our parents attended high school. If there were photos taken then, they reside in someone else's picture album, for I don't seem to have any.)


Walkin'

Pearl, our two-and-a-half-year-old Labradoodle, returned to her old tricks recently.
We adopted Pearl through a local dog rescue operation. By six months, she didn’t sell so she either had to get out or be put down. She probably never stepped a paw outside of a cage. Kept on a diet that makes stools soft, her six square feet of space was cleaned by a disinterested worker with a hose.
It was all she knew.
Then one day she was suddenly yanked into another cage, which was scary enough, but it did something that terrified her even more: it shook as it was in transport to us, her new friends.

William E. Wilson

William E. Wilson, 67, of Toddville, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at his home from a courageous battle with cancer. Services were held Thursday, September 17, at Noelridge Park Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed in Mount Clark Cemetery in Central City. Visitation was held Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.


Thelma Hazel Walter

Thelma Hazel Walter, 88, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Celebration of Life Service was held Tuesday, Sept. 15, at North English United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kirk Statler officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation was Sept. 14 at Powell Funeral Home in North English.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Walter and wife, Geri, of Cedar Rapids; and Gene Walter and wife, Jane, of Tulsa, Okla. www.powellfuneralhomes.com.


Mildred Mary (Benjamin) Stalkfleet

Mildred Mary (Benjamin) Stalkfleet, 85, of Iowa City, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Mercy Hospice Care in Iowa City following a lengthy illness. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy Hospice Care of Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.


Kenneth James Morlan

Kenneth James Morlan, 69, of Oxford, died peacefully Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospital surrounded by his family.
Both the visitation and service were held at Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin, with visitation Tuesday, Sept. 15, and service Sept. 16 with Pastor Beverly Marshall-Goodell officiating. A luncheon in the church fellowship hall followed the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Kenneth J. Morlan Memorial Fund.


Judy Meincke

Judy Meincke, 48, of West Branch, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at her home. Funeral service was held Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Rev. Betsey Neipert officiated. Casket bearers were Barry Berg, Bill Batzkiel, Leo Kirkpatrick, John Wertzbaugher, Alan Birkhofer and Rick Smith. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Monday at the funeral home.


Kathryn M. Davis

Kathryn M. Davis, 93, of North Liberty, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Coralville.
Visitation and services were held Thursday, Sept. 17 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Kathryn chose to be cremated following the service. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Visiting Nurses Association.


Food for Thought

For the past three years, health problems and bad timing have prevented me from taking my usual mini-vacations to northwestern Iowa, where there is a little old house that my family uses as a home base for reunions and fishing trips. The surrounding area, including Palo Alto, Clay and Emmet counties, is close to Minnesota and, like Minnesota, contains many lovely glacial lakes (there must be at least a half dozen within a half hour's drive from the house).
