Food for Thought

It seems I've made more than my share of trips to town this winter, what with meetings, doctor appointments, grocery shopping and picking up those prescriptions. Snow and ice have forced me to keep my eyes pretty much glued to the road, so I haven't paid much attention to the scenery. What's to look at, anyway, except more snow and ice? A few days ago, though, I was driving between Solon and Iowa City on Highway 1, in no particular hurry and enjoying the sunshine for a change, which had me feeling almost spring-like. I didn't like what I saw.

Youth groups to present St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s Night

OXFORD– The youth of St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s churches will be hosting St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s Night on Saturday, March 20, beginning with 4 p.m. Mass at St. Mary’s Auditorium, 133 E. Main St., Oxford.
Afterward, from 5-7 p.m., a traditional Irish meal will be served, with corn beef and cabbage or a chicken breast and ham dinner with all the fixings. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students in seventh through twelfth grade, $5 for students K-6, and children 4 and under free.


Kirkwood career workshops set at Iowa City campus

IOWA CITY– Kirkwood Community College will offer a series of free workshops to assist area residents in job searches and career exploration. The free workshops will focus on basic skills needed by those seeking employment or new career directions.
The following workshops will be presented by Kirkwood Career Services Director Danielle Ebaugh, in Room 216 at the Iowa City Kirkwood Campus Credit Center from 9-11 a.m. each day:
Tuesday, March 16– Interviewing Skills; Tuesday, April 20– Cover Letters/Job Applications; Tuesday, May 11– Resume Writing (repeat of Feb. 23 workshop)


Englert rolls out the red carpet for Academy Awards event

IOWA CITY – On Sunday, March 7, The Englert Theatre will host a fundraising event unlike any the theatre has seen before.
A live screening of the Academy Awards, “Hollywood Live! Hosted by Chris Okiishi” will also feature movie-themed food and costume contests, “The Winning Envelope” grab bags, and a silent auction. Admission to this event is free (although small donations at the door are welcome).


Theology on tap

NORTH LIBERTY– If participating in a Bible study at church or attending church has sounded a bit intimidating to you, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church invites you to be part of another option! On Monday, March 1, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Gus's in Coralville, church members will be meeting to reflect on scripture while Pastor Tim Smith will share a bit more of the context and background, and perhaps introduce some fresh ways of engaging Biblical text.


Registration for Babe Ruth Baseball begins this Saturday

NORTH LIBERTY– Families are invited to attend registration for the 2010 Babe Ruth Baseball team, a program for youth aged 12-15. The event will be held this Saturday, Feb. 27, from 1:30-3 p.m. at the North Liberty Recreation Center.
Player registrations will be accepted until March 19. If you are unable to attend this Saturday’s registration, additional registration forms will be available at the North Liberty & Coralville Rec. Centers or e-mail at nlcbaberuth@yahoo.com.

Michael Schmitt

Michael R. Schmitt, 45, of Durham, N.C., formerly of Marion, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, due to complications from influenza. A private memorial service was held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Mount Vernon Feb. 20. There was no visitation.


Margaret Ritchie

Margaret E. Bilsland Ritchie, 93, of Irving Point, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center after a short illness. Services were held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Feb. 16 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.


Ramona Parrott

Ramona L. (Brown) Parrott, 51, of Marion, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, following her 14-year battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Life Tabernacle Church, Iowa City, with burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation was Feb. 16 at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Ramona’s memory.

Joyce Dusanek

Joyce Ann (Potter) Dusanek, 74, of Iowa City, formerly of Anamosa, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010. A celebration of her life was held on Feb. 20 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, with visitation before the service. Lahey Funeral & Cremation Services in Wyoming is in charge of arrangements.
