Solon Methodist Church hosting Fall Bazaar Nov. 12

SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Church will be hosting a Fall Bazaar Saturday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the church, coinciding with a Hawkeye Home Game Dinner. The bazaar will feature crafts, baked goods and a silent auction. The silent auction will run through Sunday, Nov. 13, and remaining sale items will be available after church services. The winning auction bids will be tallied Nov. 13 and winners will be contacted by phone.

The Solon Community School District Board of Education will host a public forum on the Solon Outdoor Event Center (OEC) during a special board meeting Thursday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Solon High School media center. The public is invited to attend and provide input to board members and school

A long drive on Golf View

NORTH LIBERTY– A new east-west thoroughfare has recently opened in North Liberty.
Golf View Drive now extends from Highway 965 all the way through to Front Street, one more project checked off the list of long-range improvements to Highway 965. Across the highway, Golf View now lines up nicely with Fairview Lane, allowing easy travel westward all the way to Kansas Avenue.


Hawk Talk

What a difference a week makes.
Last week, you would have thought the sky was falling and dogs and cats were living together… why? Because the Hawkeyes lost to Minnesota 22-21 when they were favored by 15.
Former Iowa quaerterback Jim Hartlieb once said that losing hurts more than winning feels good… unless you beat Michigan 24-16 on a last-second, goal line stand.
The Hawkeyes first played Michigan in 1900, winning 28-5. They have played the Wolverines 57 times and have never beaten them three years in a row… until last Saturday.

Janice K. Underdahl, 64, of Solon, formerly of West Union, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011. Burnham-Wood and S.K. Rogers Funeral Home, West Union.


Leslie Pirkl

Leslie Ann (Morrison) Pirkl, 48, died Nov. 1, 2011, after a 17-month battle with brain cancer. Funeral services were held Nov. 7 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Brent Hartwig officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Leslie was born Oct. 4, 1963, in Seymour, Ind., the daughter of Edgar and Sandra (Stanfield) Morrison. Leslie moved to Iowa City in 1980 and graduated from City High School in 1983. On April 17, 1993, Leslie married Edward “Edd” Pirkl at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Local survivors include a sister-in-law Christine (Clayton) Land of Swisher.


Richard Lee Pearl

Richard Lee Pearl, 62, of Washington, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at Washington County Hospital. Services were held Monday, Nov. 7, at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation was Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Richard was born Oct. 20, 1949, in Bloomington, Ill., to Donald and Roma (Lewis) Pearl.


Janet Miller

Janet A. (Young) Miller, 66, of Swisher, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at the Dennis Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Memorial services were held Nov. 3 at Hope Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids by Pastor Dan Clark-Bridges. Arrangements were by Murdoch-Linwood Funereal Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids.


Richard Held Sr.

Richard H. Held Sr., 80, of Marion, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held Nov. 5 at Garden View Chapel in Waterloo. Burial was in Garden of Memories, Waterloo.
Local survivors include a daughter Monica (Jeff) Simmons of Ely.
