Since Thanksgiving was last week, I have a lot of things I’m thankful for.
One is by the time this story is out, I will have come back from Miles City, Mont., with my cousin Robin after we celebrated my mom’s 90th birthday Sunday, Nov. 25.
I’m also thankful the Iowa Hawkeyes get to play in a bowl game so hopefully they can get rid of the sick feeling that came out of Lincoln Friday as Nebraska shut down Iowa, 20-7.

Robert “Bob” Wheeler, 86, of Solon, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
A family and friends gathering was held on Saturday, Nov. 26, at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Graveside services with Military Honors were held at the Morse Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Bob’s memory to Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent to his family at www.gayandciha.com.


Maurice E. Pickering

Maurice E. Pickering, 98, of Keystone, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospice in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 26, at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne, with Pastor Norm Bennett officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Belle Plaine.


Edwin Dale Wisnousky, Jr.

Edwin Dale Wisnousky, Jr., 74, of Swisher, passed away Nov. 22, 2011, at the Solon Nursing Care Center of congestive heart failure. Funeral Services were held Saturday, Nov. 26, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed at Dupont Cemetery in rural Swisher.
Edwin was born on June 8, 1937, in Rock Island, Ill. to Edwin Sr. and Leona (Kuderna) Wisnousky. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1955 and Coe College in 1959.
Ed loved statistics, gardening, the Johnson County Fair and 4-H Club activities.


David O. Smith

David O. Smith, 58, of Swisher, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at home after a four-year battle with a metastatic kidney cancer. A visitation was held on Friday, Nov. 25, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life was held Nov 26 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home by Deb Black. Inurnment was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Prairieburg.


Leta L. Miller

Leta L. Miller, 87, of Wellman, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at home. Funeral services were held at Saturday, Nov. 27, at Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wellman. Pastor Elmer Miller officiated. Burial was held in Upper Deer Creek Cemetery.


Walkin'

Recently I detailed how I came across a skeleton in the dank basement I worked in as part of my duties of publishing the town’s newspaper. Much was fact, but not all; the reader is left to tease out the truth from the fiction. I also related how there was a dearth of suspects in my murder mystery. Heading east on Main Street, the manager of the Legion was ruled out as being too honest. Passes were also given to the owner of the hardware store and her long-time clerk for being too guileless.
Working west, however, Bob of Bob’s Garage could be the culprit.


Food For Thought

I have mixed feelings about Thanksgiving leftovers. My first inclination is to reach for two slices of soft, white bread, mayonnaise, and crisp lettuce leaves and construct that turkey sandwich that sends me, almost as stuffed as was the turkey, off to bed and some wild dreams brought on by too much whipped cream on all three kinds of pie.

AMES– Live Healthy Iowa is inviting all Iowans to apply as a member of the Dream Team during the 100-day Wellness Challenge next year from Jan. 23 until May 1. The 100-day Wellness Challenge is a simple and affordable team-based challenge encouraging Iowans to make health choices by tracking their activity minutes and/or weight loss for 100 Days. This Dream Team will consist of from two to 10 adults chosen through an application process.
