NORTH LIBERTY– She is a big sister. He is a little brother. Together, they make one dynamic duo.
Kinsey and Keon have been matched through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Johnson County program since February 2010. The two have taken in baseball games, gone to the museum, played games, baked cupcakes and even attended an Iowa Hawkeye football game at Kinnick Stadium. They picnic together, play catch and sometimes, do nothing more than chat about how their days went, joke around and hang out.

SOLON– Solon’s varsity baseball team outscored its opponents 72-17 last week.
The Spartans moved to 13-0 with lopsided wins against Mt. Vernon, Marion and Independence and lead Iowa’s Class 3A in home runs, runs scored and batting average, according to statistics compiled by quikstatsiowa.com.
Solon took a pair from Mt. Vernon on the road Monday, 12-8 and 21-3, behind its potent offense.
Several Spartans had multiple hits in the first game.  Marshall Koehn, Derrick Loveless, Tyler Smith, Shawn Olson and Ryan Butler collected two hits each, while Nick Day went 3-5.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Lady Spartans picked up their first two losses of the season last week, but both came against ranked opponents.
Solon’s varsity softball team split a doubleheader with No. 12 (in 3A) Mt Vernon before a narrow loss to No. 3 (4A) Des Moines East at the Bill Hennessey Classic Softball Tournament held at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
But Solon, now 12-2 on the season, stayed close to No. 2 West Delaware at the top of the WaMaC East standings, and continued to rack up wins against quality opponents.

Recently added to the library’s DVD collection:

“Blue Valentine” (2010, R) stars Ryan Gossling and Michelle Williams (in an Oscar-nominated performance) as a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods.
“Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” (2011, G) follows teen sensation Justin Bieber on his 2010 concert tour.
“Gnomeo and Juliet” (2011, G) an animated feature in which the neighboring gardens of Montague and Capulet are at war, but the gnomes, Gnomeo and Juliet, are in love.
