Dolly & Me and Mommy At Tea

On Wednesday, July 20, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. the Old Capitol Doll Club of Iowa, in partnership with the Solon Public Library, will present a one-time special eventat the library.  It is free of charge and recommended for 7-12 year olds and their moms or grandmothers. There will be a program about what dolls are made of. Cookies and drinks will be served. Door prizes have been donated by major doll manufacturers and all the children will receive a tote bag with favors.

Recently added to the library’s DVD collection:
“Herb & Dorothy” (2008, NR) This inspiring documentary chronicles the story of unlikely art collectors Herb & Dorothy Vogel, proving that it’s not necessary to be wealthy in order to build a significant collection of art.  A postal clerk and a librarian, the Vogels share a passion for art, which they pursued over decades, becoming two of the most important collectors of minimalist and conceptual art with more than 4,000 pieces.


New adult hardcovers

“Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base” by Anne Jacobsen is a non-fiction work about the military base located in the desert 75 miles outside of Las Vegas. Denied that it existed for many years by the U.S. government, this is the first book based on interviews with eyewitnesses to Area 51 history. Jacobsen shows what has really gone on in the Nevada desert, from testing nuclear weapons to building secret supersonic jets.


New audio books

Audio books are another popular check-out item and since so many are continually checked out, perhaps it is hard to know what is available. Here are four new ones to consider and if they are checked out, ask to have them put on hold for you.


Summer Reading Program

The Summer Reading Program is still being attended in record numbers and T-shirts are flying off the shelf to kids who have completed their reading challenges. Around 50 preschooler and kindergarteners have been coming to the library on Tuesday mornings for Storytime. Last Tuesday, over 40 middle schoolers came to Teens On Tuesdays @ 2 for “A Visit To Asia” programming. Thanks to Nomi’s in Solon for providing all the chop sticks and fortune cookies for this event.


Lakeview furniture coming from Prison Industries

SOLON-Lakeview Elementary School is set to receive furniture from a rather popular manufacturer: Iowa Prison Industries.
Board of Education members– except Lianne Westcot, who was not present– unanimously approved the $43,606 construction cost during a board meeting on Monday, June 13. As planned, Iowa Prison Industries will build items that include a Madison chair lounge, an oak library table and bookcases for Lakeview’s media center. The project is funded by the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy, said Board President Dave Asprey.


Solon council leans toward Brosh building

SOLON– It’s narrowed down to one choice.
If there’s going to be a new city hall anytime soon, it’s either going to be the Brosh Chapel and Community Center or nothing.
At a special meeting last week, Solon City Council members decided against considering the Solon Public Library as a potential city hall site and continued discussions about the possible purchase of the Brosh location.


PNE to build Solon support center for wind farm

SOLON– Officials from PNE WIND USA Inc (PNE), based in Chicago, have announced plans to locate an operations and maintenance center in Solon.  This new facility would support a planned 3,000-acre, 30-megawatt wind farm which was announced in February.
The project is contingent upon Johnson County passing a new land use ordinance for wind farms specific to how and where wind turbines can be sited in the county.


Fox Ridge friends come together in Solon

SOLON– It was all started by one innocent Fourth of July picnic.
Last year, Kathy Borowski, a resident of the Fox Ridge housing development who moved to Solon with her husband to be closer to her family, decided to get to know her neighbors a bit better by organizing a picnic on the Fourth of July.
As the fiesta commenced, Borowski and the others noticed that most of her neighbors shared an interesting connection: all of them had also moved to Solon from somewhere else in Iowa to be closer to their families.
