Solon Public Library anniversary celebration offers special events Aug. 14-21

SOLON– The Solon Public Library will be hosting a series of special events the week of Aug. 14-21 in honor of the library building’s 10th anniversary.
On Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m. Annie Wilcox, a speaker from Barnes & Noble, will discuss “What’s New?” in the literary world. Topics will cover new releases, books you might be interested in that are not on the “Best Seller List”, books from Iowa authors and just fun reads.


Supervisor says county auditor’s survey was skewed

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Auditor Tom Slockett sent 1,500 survey postcards to voters in rural and unattached voting precincts to assess opinions on current polling stations, should they be closed or consolidated.
At least two members of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors were unhappy about the unscientific survey.


Stutsman to make a bid for Iowa House

JOHNSON COUNTY– Johnson County Supervisor Sally Stutsman has a long history of serving her communities; it is within that spirit that she hopes to takes a major step into a new and wider realm of public service.
Stutsman has announced her intention to run for the Iowa House in 2012. She decided to run after the state adopted a legislative redistricting plan that created House District 77, which includes all of Johnson County and has no incumbent representative.


Solon council aims lower for care center

SOLON– Just like that, it was done.
The Solon Retirement Village had been seeking property tax incentives for its new memory care and skilled nursing units from the Solon City Council, and the discussion rolled over to an Aug. 3 meeting.
The care center had asked for 100 percent of the new taxes generated by the facilities to be reimbursed through the city’s Tax Increment Finance (TIF) fund for five years, and another five years of gradually declining rebates.

Michael Casey Sewall

Michael “Mike” Casey Sewall, 87, of North Liberty, died Friday, July 29, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of complications related to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. To celebrate Mike’s life friends joined the family August 4 at the Elks Club in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pathways Adult Day Care, 817 Pepperwood Lane, Iowa City, IA 52240. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.


Jennie Steffens

Jennie L. Steffens, 91, of Lowden, died Monday, August 1, 2011, in Wheatland Manor Nursing Home. Services were held August 4 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lowden, with the Rev. Timothy Jones officiating. Burial: Mayflower Cemetery, Oxford Junction.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy (Howard) Kroemer of Lowden; two sons, Joe (Karen) of Swisher, and Bruce of Coralville; nine grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. Jennie was born Dec. 24, 1919.


Thomas Smith

Thomas “Tom” Smith, 67 of Marion, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at his home following a long illness. Services were held August 6 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Marion. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids with Military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 298, Marion.


Jerome Reichenbach Jr.

Jerome “Jerry” Reichenbach Jr. was born Sept. 14, 1981, in Charleston, S.C. He went to be with our Lord Monday morning, Aug. 1, 2011, at the age of 29. Jerry was the son of Jerome (Jerry) Reichenbach and Kimberly (Kim) Barta. He attended school at Prairie Elementary, Middle and High School.
On June 28, 2008, he married Erika Ellingson in Lawrence, Kan. They lived in Lawrence until Erika completed college, and then moved to Tucson, Ariz., to be closer to Jerry’s mother, Kim. Jerry and Erika just recently moved back to Iowa and took up residence in Des Moines.


Ronald Pohlman

Ronald Henry Pohlman, 62, of Florissant, Mo., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Memorial services were held August 1 at Alexander-White-Mullen Funeral Home in St. Ann, Mo. Interment followed at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Ron was born Dec. 14, 1948, in Vinton, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Robert.
