Alton Johnson

Alton C. “AC” Johnson, 92, lifetime resident of the Iowa City area, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Mercy Iowa City. A gathering of family and friends was held Aug. 23 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Alton’s memory.

Jessie Hargrove

Jessie Hargrove, 67, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital following a brief illness. Services were held Aug. 27 at Gospel Tabernacle Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Mary Beets and Pastor Tim Pridegon. Burial was at Linwood Cemetery.
Jessie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Local survivors include a son, Anthony Hargrove and wife Jodie of North Liberty.


Mary Beckwith Foster

Mary Beckwith Foster, 72, of North Liberty and formerly of Spencer, passed away at her home on Aug. 19, 2011.
Graveside services were held Friday, Aug. 26, at 1:30 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Visitations were held between 12:30-1:15, August 26 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
In late September, the family will host a celebration of Mary’s life at Jefferson Point Senior Housing in North Liberty. Details and online condolences can be obtained from Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City at www.lensingfuneral.com.


Elsie Carter

Elsie “Darlene” Carter, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. A funeral service celebrating her life was held Aug. 29, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Local survivors include her brother, Edward (Barb) Vosmek of Ely.
She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, Howard Scott.

Did you ever play that game of inventing stories or backgrounds for strangers? You know, you see someone sitting alone in a restaurant and you imagine who they are, what they’re planning to do as soon as they finish this meal, why they are alone, what’s in that big tote bag on the floor at their feet. I used to try to guess where my fellow bus passengers were going and why. Were they going to somewhere and someone, or running away from something? Did that girl with her hands jammed deep into her pockets lose her gloves or did she give them to some homeless person?

CCA Pink Night to benefit cancer treatment centers

TIFFIN– On Sept. 30, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clipper football team will host a special fundraiser, Pink Out 2011, to benefit local cancer clinics.
Actor and CCA alumnus Ashton Kutcher donated pink jerseys for the CCA football team for that night’s game. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase game jerseys during a silent auction held that night. Kutcher and his wife, actress Demi Moore, also autographed jerseys that will be part of the auction.


American Legion Riders raffle

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Riders have launched their fall raffle. Funds from the raffle are used in various community projects– including providing an annual scholarship to a Solon graduating senior whose parent or grandparent has served in the military, and sending Christmas care packages to local service personnel serving around the world during the holiday season.


Solon to vote on Brosh purchase

SOLON– The Solon City Council will ask residents to decide whether or not to purchase the Brosh Chapel as the site for a new city hall.
At an Aug. 3 meeting, council members voted to move forward with the purchase of Brosh location, contingent on voter approval of a bond issue on the November general election ballot.
Now, the city will spend the next two months deciding on financing options and trying to educate the public about the reasons behind the decision.
