Old Gold Diner seeking new site manager

SOLON– The Old Gold Senior Dining Site Council and Elder Services of Iowa City are seeking to hire a Site Manager.  Three hours daily, Monday-Friday.  This individual will deliver meals from Iowa City to the Solon Congregate Meal Site (located at the Solon United Methodist Church) and generally manage the congregate meal site. Our Lord’s Church candy and gift sale Dec. 2-3

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will be holding its eighth annual candy sale Friday, Nov. 30, from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Featured are a large variety of homemade candies as well as gifts and homemade items. Santa and Mrs. Claus will greet children at the sale from 1-3 p.m. on Dec. 1. Enjoy a cup of coffee and work your way around the room and select your items.


Free Thanksgiving meal at Our Lord’s Church Nov. 22

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will host a free Thanksgiving meal Thursday, Nov. 22, at 12 p.m. All are welcome. Reservations are not required, but would be helpful. The meal will be served at the church, 131 N. Market St., Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available. Call Duane or Anna at 841-2243 with questions or to make a reservation.


Solon Griefshare session set for Thursday, Nov. 15

SOLON– Have you lost someone and are wondering how you will survive the holidays? That first holiday can be much easier with some guidance and planning. The Solon Griefshare Team will host its annual “How to Survive the Holidays After the Loss of a Loved One.” program this month. The Griefshare team is comprised of members from all three of Solon’s church communities.

SOLON– A record number of Johnson County residents exercised their right to vote last Tuesday, Nov. 6.
The Johnson County Auditor’s office reported 91,383 registered voters in the county for this election, but that’s not a record; there were 92,222 registered to vote in the 2008 presidential election. This year, though, 82.58 percent of the county’s voters cast ballots, or 75,463 voters (compared to 73,231 in 2008).

Hawk Talk

After losing to Purdue on a last second field goal, 27-24, it’s going to be a long shot that the Hawkeyes will be going to a bowl this year.
Their last two games are at Michigan and home against Nebraska... they will be big-time underdogs against both.
I’m going to do something that I have not done in my 11 years of covering the Hawks.
I’m going to second-guess the coaches. I’ve done that many times before but not in the paper.

Sharon Kay “Kate” Wetherell, 71, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012.


James Thein

James F. Thein, 64, of Garnavillo, formerly of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg. Per his wishes, he has been cremated. A private family inurnment was held at the Garnavillo Cemetery. Iowa Cremation assisted the family.
Local survivors include daughter Jamie Thein of North Liberty. James Forrest Thein was born Sept. 17, 1948, in Guttenberg, the son of Forrest and Janell (Mueller) Thein. Jim worked as an E.E.G. technologist for many years and was an avid golfer and enjoyed motorcycles.
