Solon griefshare session set for Thursday, Nov. 15

SOLON– Have you lost someone and are wondering how you will survive the holidays? That first holiday can be much easier with some guidance and planning. The Solon Griefshare Team will host its annual “How to Survive the Holidays After the Loss of a Loved One.” program this month. The Griefshare team is comprised of members from all three of Solon’s church communities.


Solon KCs breakfast coming Sunday, Nov. 11

SOLON– The Solon Knights of Columbus will hosting a breakfast Sunday, Nov. 11, from 8 a.m. until noon at St. Mary Catholic Church parish hall. The cost is $6 for ages 12 and older, $3 for ages six through 12, and free for ages six and younger. Omelets are available upon request.


Standards-based grading a work in progress

SOLON– Standards-based grades have changed the way Solon teachers assess students. And while some are satisfied with the system, others aren’t waiting to see the report card.
An October district survey of 376 students showed the new grades were raising questions about years of homework and straightforward tests and quizzes.
Over a dozen pages of anonymous comments from students tell the story from a student perspective; fear of change. Many commenters asked for homework credit to be reinstated or worried about grade point average and transcripts for college and career.

Hawkeye men and women roll

I know they were only exhibition games, but the Iowa men’s and women’s basketball teams put on a great show Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
There has been a lot of hype about the men’s basketball team coming into the season. With a top-rated recruiting class and a good returning nucleus, there’s a lot of hope for a good season.
I know that not one Quincy player could probably start for a Big Ten team but when the Hawks jumped out to a 22-0 lead and cruised to a 100-54 win the fans were buzzing.

Who would have thought that the Iowa-Indiana game would be huge for both teams to get a shot at a bowl game?
The Hawks started strong, but couldn’t finish and fell to 4-5, 2-3 in the Big Ten, with a 24-21 loss.
It was a busy weekend for Hawks fans.
I actually went to the field hockey game on Friday.
Iowa hosted fourth-ranked Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament and the Nittany Lions came out on top, 3-2.
Saturday, the football game at Indiana was delayed for an hour because of the weather and Sunday the men’s and women’s basketball teams played a doubleheader at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.


Michael Tedrow

Michael Joseph Tedrow, 64, of rural Auxvasse, Mo., passed away Oct. 24, 2012, at his home. There was a Celebration of Life on Oct. 27 at Callaway Christian Church in Fulton, Mo., with Mark Kummer officiating. Military honors followed the service at the church.


Jean Oberthien

Jean Marie Oberthien, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital from pneumonia.
Local survivors include her son Jeff (Laurie) Oberthien and her granddaughter Nicole Oberthien, both of Solon.
Jean was born Jan. 19, 1928, in Red Oak, the daughter of Harry and Pauline (Ervein) Johnson. She married John Oberthien on Jan. 9, 1952. Memorials may be directed to the family. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.teahenfuneralhome.com.

Linda Mary Curtis, 59, of Arlington, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at the Manchester Regional Medical Center. A celebration of Linda’s life was held Nov. 3 at her home, in Arlington.
