Early out Jan. 19

The early out activity for Thursday, Jan. 19, will be crafting thumbies and kazoos from 1 until 2 p.m. for all Solon students. Thumbies are little drawings made out of fingerprints. The kids will stamp their fingerprints on paper and then draw little designs like animals and faces out of the fingerprint. The kazoos will be made from cardboard paper rolls. No registration is required. Elementary age students participating need to be picked up by their parent or caregiver at 2 p.m.
The next movie will be on early out Thursday, Feb. 2, from 1 until 3 p.m.

January 15th

Blood drive to be Feb. 6

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center will hold a blood drive at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Monday, Feb. 6, from 4 until 7 p.m. in Rooms 1 and 3 on the lower level.
In an average week, UIHC patients need nearly 600 units of blood products. Just one pint of donated blood can help save the lives of several people.
To be eligible to donate blood a person must:
• Be 17 years old or 16 with parental consent;
• Weigh at least 110 pounds;
• Be cold or flu symptom free for five days;
• Pass a mini-physical and medical history inquiry.
• Have a photo ID;

Free dance class coming in February

NORTH LIBERTY– Sign up now for a free, four-week session of dance classes taught by the University of Iowa Dancers In Company, held at the North Liberty Recreation Center from Feb. 11 to March 4.
The series of hour-long weekend workshops will teach components of hip-hop, jazz and modern dance, as well as opportunities to learn combinations from the company’s repertoire. On week four, participants will travel to the University of Iowa to see Dancers in Company perform.

Creek is rising in Tiffin

TIFFIN— After a dismal 0-6 record as a start to the 2011-2012 season, Steve Ottoson’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clipper boys appear to be on a roll. The squad ended 2011 with a home win against Mid Prairie and carried that momentum into the new year with a pair of back-to-back wins.
The Creek boys pounded Independence on the road Tuesday, Jan. 3, and returned home for a visit from the West Branch Bears on Thursday, Jan. 5. CCA took the 59-47 non-conference win.
“It’s a good win against a very good team,” Coach Ottoson said, basking in the afterglow of victory.

Unhappy start to New Year

TIFFIN— Matt Haas’ Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers opened the new year with a pair of losses on the home hardwood. The Creek girls fell 56-45 Tuesday, Jan. 3, to Independence, and took a non-conference loss on Thursday, Jan. 5, losing 57-42 at the hands of the West Branch Bears.

Scout troop 216 to host chili supper

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 32nd annual chili supper from 4:30 until 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5 with children age five and under admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional scout cobbler.

Babe Ruth league early registration begins Jan. 14

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Babe Ruth League will be accepting early registration for the 2012 season starting Jan. 14 at Diamond Dreams in Coralville. Registration is open to residents of North Liberty, Coralville and the surrounding communities. Early registration will be from Jan. 14 through Feb. 18, at a cost of $130. Final registration is Feb.19 through March 23, at a cost of $150. Registration fee includes full uniform (hat, jersey, pants, socks, belt) league fees and insurance.

North Liberty Community Library board opening

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Library is accepting applications for a position on the Library Board of Trustees. Applicants must be a resident of North Liberty and have a strong interest in the future of the library. Applications may be picked up at the library, or on the City of North Liberty’s commission website at http://northlibertyiowa.org/government/commissionsboards/.

Fine amnesty month at North Liberty Community Library

NORTH LIBERTY– January is fine amnesty month at the North Liberty Community Library. Fines on all overdue material returned in January will be forgiven. It does not matter how overdue the material is, even years overdue. The library would just appreciate getting their material back. Existing fines will not be forgiven but may be paid in cash, in food for fines, read off or worked off. Call 319-626-5701 and talk to a staff member with any questions.

Technology petting zoo at the North Liberty library

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Library (NLCL) will be offering a technology petting zoo for the public. Janet Lubben, NLCL’s technology services librarian, will have several gadgets for people to test drive. There will be a PC Tablet, iPad and Nook on site. Lubben will discuss services the library offers, such as free downloadable audio and e-books. Feel free to bring your device along if you have questions about it.
There will be a question and answer session about devices people have purchased or received as gifts. Information sheets will be available at the table.
