Making some cuts

SOLON– Industrial arts classes are being dropped by local school districts for budgetary reasons and for some, shop classes and other career-focused courses will eventually be replaced by an educational tech center called the Kirkwood Johnson County Regional Center (KJCRC).
KJCRC will be a centralized career academy run by Kirkwood Community College (KCC) at the University of Iowa’s Oakdale campus in Coralville. The new school will be completed in 2014 and is modeled on KCC’s Jones County Regional Education Center, which opened in 2008.

TIFFIN — After 100 minutes of battle, it all came down to 10 kicks Tuesday afternoon (April 3) as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers opened their 2012 campaign at home against the West Liberty Comets.

TIFFIN — The Washington Demons woke a sleeping giant. Four and-a-half minutes into the season opener between Washington and Clear Creek Amana Monday, April 2, a Demon scored a goal. Sara Bleeker’s Clippers went to battle stations and delivered a withering attack, ending 11 goals later under the 10-goal mercy rule.
“It would’ve been a really different game if we hadn’t come back,” Bleeker told her ladies after the match. The early score shocked the Clippers, Bleeker said, and rallied them to an awesome performance.


ICCSD parents to approach council April 10

NORTH LIBERTY– A group of concerned Iowa City school district parents scheduled time to appear on the North Liberty City Council’s meeting agenda this week.
Parents requested an audience with the council for Tuesday, April 10, to revisit the topic of a third Iowa City Community School District regular high school, which many parents in the North Liberty area would like to see built in North Liberty. The group’s presentation is scheduled for a pre-meeting work session at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers, 1 Quail Creek Cr., North Liberty.


NLD to host breakfast business mixer April 17

NORTH LIBERTY– In an effort to promote the city’s growing business community, North Liberty Development, a not-for-profit group of business owners and advocates, will host a breakfast business mixer Tuesday, April 17, from 7:30 until 9 a.m. at Hills Bank & Trust, 590 Forevergreen Rd. in North Liberty.
At the event, local business people and city leaders will have the opportunity to mingle, network and meet one-on-one over breakfast. Also, city representatives will give a presentation about the new North Liberty Small Business Assistance Program.

The “Nyan Cat,” pronounced “Knee-ahn,” is a worldwide web video sensation with millions of fans, and one local junior high art club is tapping into the viral power of the feline animation to fight hunger.
How are they fighting hunger with a cartoon cat?


Kent Park campground to open this weekend

TIFFIN– The F.W. Kent Park campground will open for the season on Friday, April 13. Daily fees for electric sites are $15, and non-electric sites are $10. Kent Park is located 12 miles west of Iowa City on Highway 6, just past Tiffin.


Boys baseball taking applications

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Boys Baseball Organization is now taking applications for the 2012 season. The league is open to children ages 12 through 15 who reside in Iowa City or any other community. All games are played at the Mercer baseball complex near Southeast Junior High in Iowa City. See www.icbaseball.org for information and registration forms. The form and registration fee are due in by April 13. The season runs from May 21 until July 28.


CCA’s ‘Seussical the Musical’ April 12-14

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School will present “Seussical the Musical” April 12 and 13 at 7 p.m., and April 14 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The show will be held in the Performing Arts Center located at the CCA high school in Tiffin. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for students and seniors, and will be available at the door.
“Seussical” is based on the works of Dr. Seuss and weaves together his most famous tales and characters from at least fifteen of his books.


Forever Green Garden Center open house April 13 through 15

CORALVILLE– Forever Green Garden Center will host an Open House from April 13 through April 15 at 125 Forevergreen Road in Coralville. Hours are Friday, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday noon until 5 p.m. The spring open house is a fun family event with lots of free activities for all ages, including seminars, sales and door prizes. Explore greenhouses with over 10,000 flowers and vegetables. Kids can plant flowers, enjoy a coloring contest and explore nature items at an art exploration table. Pet and feed baby calves, lambs, chicks and other farm animals.
