SUMC blood drive on June 19

SOLON– The Solon community will host a community blood drive from 2:30 until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at the Family Life Center located at 133 N. West St., Solon. The blood drive is sponsored by Solon United Methodist Church.
To donate, please contact Rick Havel at 319-530-1596 to make an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.


Legion baseball breakfast June 24

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will host a breakfast on Sunday, June 24, from 7:30 a.m. until noon. The menu will be the usual all-you-can eat at a reasonable price. Proceeds will be used to support the Johnson County American Legion Baseball Program. Come in and bring your friends and family for a great breakfast, and help support the American Legion Baseball Program.


Construction begins next week on Highway 1

SOLON– The summer of construction for Solon residents begins next week.
The city’s two major infrastructure improvement projects for 2012– Highway 1’s intersection with 5th Street, and a facelift for Main Street– have been awarded to contractors.
Construction on the Highway 1 intersection is slated to begin June 20 with substantial completion by mid-August, while no schedule has been set for the Main Street streetscape project.
For Solon residents, both will present difficulties over a good part of the summer, with the Main Street overhaul stretching into the fall.


Harvesting agricultural education from Lakeview teaching garden

SOLON– With a grant from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), Solon school nutrition director Kelly Crossley and the Lakeview PTO have teamed up to bring students the freshest produce you can get.
On five raised beds on the primary school’s campus, five classes and one preschool class planted carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes and more on May 15.
“These beds are meant to be primarily a teaching tool for the classroom,” Crossley said, adding her biggest concern was watering the garden during a dry spring.


Schwab edges Johnson; Archer to face Loebsack

EASTERN IOWA– Results of the June 5 primary election have been officially tabulated.
Canvasses for Johnson County were conducted early this week, showing clear winners in the contested primary races for seats in U.S. Congressional District 2, Iowa’s House District 73, and Johnson County Auditor.


Optimist club bike rodeo June 23

The Solon Optimist Club summer bike rodeo will be held Saturday, June 23, at the middle school play area at 9 a.m. (8:30 a.m. sign-up). There are five age brackets: training wheels, four to five year olds, six and seven year olds, eight and nine year olds, and 10 and 11 year olds. There will be five contests, including balance, steering and paper toss. There will be a boy and girl division for each age bracket. Each age bracket will have first, second and third place trophies; also two overall championship trophies. Come practice your bicycle skills. Be sure to wear your helmet.

Lonnie Olson

Lonnie Olson (Mrs. Bill Olson) passed away quietly and before her time, in Haines City, Fla. late last month. Lonnie was a good friend and wonderful neighbor to many of us in the Solon area. While she was gone before most of us knew the details and could express our sympathy, we have found many of us would like to have some kind of memorial for her in lieu of flowers. Sadly, the Olson’s lost their oldest son, Tim, some years back, and a tree was planted in his honor near the School’s Sports Center.


Sara Myrick

Sara Stimmel Myrick, 60, of Solon, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 2, 2012. Funeral Services were held June 7 at Lensing Funeral Home. Private family burial followed the service. Joseph Lynn

Joseph “Joe” Lynn, 63, of North Liberty, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 1, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial was held June 6 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville, with the Rev. Walter Helms officiating. Committal service was held at the Lone Tree Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Joe Lynn Memorial Fund.
