Stephanie Semler

Stephanie R Semler, 31, passed away peacefully at her home in Iowa City on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, following complications of a lifelong illness. Funeral services were held June 16 at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City with Pastor Mark Pries officiating. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Stephanie R. Semler Memorial Fund.


Jeanne Pfeiffer

Jeanne H. Pfeiffer, 81, of Coralville, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Windmill Manor in Coralville following a period of declining health. Funeral services were held June 11 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. Graveside services were held at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello.


Kathryn Miller

Kathryn A. Miller, 88, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at the Lantern Park Care Center in Coralville.
Visitation was held June 14. Private family graveside services were held at Memory Gardens Cemetery.


William Lyons

William D. Lyons, 71, of North Liberty, died from complications of Parkinson’s disease on June 8, 2012.
A memorial service was held at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City on June 16 with the Reverend Steven Protzman officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City, the Wilderness Society, or the American Parkinson’s Disease Association.


Walkin'

A couple of years ago I wrote and received a grant to plant several small trees at the elementary school where I’ve been working part time. The low bid came from a company owned by Mennonites, and despite driving to the worksite in a truck all of the other labor was done by hand. You could tell the three-man crew– two young and one older– knew what they were doing as there was very little wasted motion. The young bucks did most of the heavy labor while the old man supervised and pitched in occasionally.


Food For Thought

Raccoons dug up my son’s tomato plants– twice. We won’t know for a while if the electric fencing he put up will prevent further vandalism. I see them early, just after the sun is up, making their way back from the pond. I suspect that, if they didn’t have the pond so handy, they would go the other way to the creek in the pasture. Raccoons do need water. Not only to drink, but to help them eat. We once thought it charming that they so carefully washed their food before eating it.
