Amy Neustrom

Amy Neustrom, 52, of Coralville, chose to be with her Lord on Friday, July 6, 2012. A celebration of Amy’s Life was held July 11 at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City.
Instead of flowers, her family requests that memorials be directed to the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation.
Amy was born July 7, 1959, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Michael Richard and Doris “Jackie” (Jackson) Finn. Amy married Kirk Neustrom on Oct. 10, 1987, in Iowa City.
Local survivors include her daughter, Sarah (Josh) Poggenpohl of North Liberty.


Andrew Lown

Andrew Steven “Andy” Lown, 26, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, July 8, 2012. Service was held July 13 at Teahen Funeral Home by Pastor Darran Whiting. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery. Andy’s body was cremated.
Local survivors include his father, Steve (Karen Mutchler) of Swisher and his brother Michael (Teresa) of North Liberty.
He was born Oct. 20, 1985, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Steven Lown and Terry (Franck) Lown. Andy was a graduate of Washington High School. He served in the Army in Korea and in El Paso, Texas.


Paul Kepler

Paul Preston Kepler, 87, of Lisbon, died Friday, July 6, 2012, at Hallmark Care and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were held July 9 at the Lisbon United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Tom Mattson. His burial was in Lisbon Cemetery, with military honors.
Local survivors include his children Corrine and Charles Waters of North Liberty.


Jack Hall

Jack E. “Gentleman Jack” Hall, 59, of Council Bluffs, formerly of Swisher, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at his residence. Memorial service was held July 14 at Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home in Council Bluffs. No visitation. Body has been cremated.
Jack was born July 18, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, to Jackie and Kathryn (Kane) Hall. He was a member of American Legion Rainbow Post 2, AMVETS, Eagles Aerie No. 104 and SAL, was a former chaplain of American Legion Post 2 and former commander of American Legion Post 641.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era.


David and Phyllis Craft

David, 60, and Phyllis, 57, Craft of North Liberty, formerly of Dewitt and Davenport; died in the comfort of each other’s company Sunday, July 8, 2012. Visitation was July 12 followed by a service at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service.


Joel Belew

Joel Devon Belew, 42, of Jesup, died Sunday, July 8, 2012, at home.
He was born March 17, 1970, in Elkhart, Ind., the son of Joe and Madeline Hall Belew. He married Melanie Diedrich on Aug. 20, 2004, in Waterloo.
Joel was employed with TransAmerica in Cedar Rapids as an IT project manager. He worked for 20 years in communications in Cedar Rapids including MCI, Verizon and Rockwell Collins. He was a member of Mount Olive Lodge #17, A.G. Clark Consistory #68 in Cedar Rapids and Bashir Temple #156 in Waterloo.
Local survivors include a daughter, Brittany Thornton of North Liberty.


Walkin'

(This is one of a series written about a recent visit to the southwest)

While this portion of the southwest is even more bone dry than usual, the area is awash in the confluence of the spirituality of two separate cultures.
It goes all the way back to when Hernán Cortés led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire and brought large portions of mainland Mexico under Spanish control in the early 16th century.

On a recent visit to the Amanas, friends and I were driving around the different villages and Madeline, who grew up in Amana, was pointing out interesting sights and telling us some of the local history interspersed with her childhood memories.
