The Game Time basketball league kicked off its 12th season June 20 at the North Liberty Recreation Center.
Three of the five Hawkeye recruits were in action and all of them were on the same team.
Mike Stoermer, who coaches the Coralville Hy-Vee team, picked Kali Peschel in the second round, Kayla Timmerman in the third and junior college transfer Kathryn Thomas in the fifth.
Claire Till and Nicole Smith, the other two recruits, are rehabbing knee injuries.
Kali, a 6-1 guard/forward, had 18 points and 11 rebounds in her opening game.


Robert Plumb II

Robert Plumb II, 70, passed away on June 26, 2012, at Briarwood Health Care Center, Iowa City, after a long illness.
Robert was born Sept. 15, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, to Helen and Robert Plumb Sr. He attended Iowa State University.
Local survivors include Dana Plumb of North Liberty.
A private family inurnment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Iowa City Hospice.

Irene Maxa

Irene V. Maxa, 87, died at Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas on Sunday, May 13, 2012, following a sudden illness.
Memorial services were held on July 3, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with burial at the Blaine Cemetery near Swisher. Memorial services were held Wednesday, May 16, in Garland, Texas.


Ryan Johnson

Ryan K. Johnson, 20, of Tiffin, and formerly of Oxford Junction, died Wednesday, June 20, 2012, as a result of a motorcycle accident in Tiffin.
Funeral services were held June 26 at Lahey Funeral Home in Oxford Junction. Burial was in the Mayflower Cemetery, Oxford Junction.
Ryan Kelly Johnson was born on Feb. 2, 1992, in Iowa City, the son of Rex and Brenda (Leonard) Johnson. He graduated from Midland High School in 2010 and went on to study criminal justice at Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids.
Ryan worked as a detailer at Billion Auto in Iowa City and Costco in Coralville.


Ronald Escher

Ronald M. Escher, 73, of Newhall, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, with his loving family around him. Funeral Mass was held June 30 at St. Jude Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mark Reasonor.
Ronald was born Feb. 2, 1939, in Washington County, the son of Vern and Lucille (Beenblossom) Escher. Ronald was employed at Goss in Cedar Rapids for 35 plus years until its closing.
He served in the U. S. Army during peacetime and was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
Local survivors include Vern E. Escher of Ely.


Daryl Dosch

Daryl John Dosch, 71, of rural Swisher, died Monday, June 25, 2012, in his home. Private family services were held at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with burial in Urbana Cemetery.
Daryl was born July 28, 1940, in Pine Island, Minn., the son of Ray and Catherine (Schutz) Dosch. He graduated from Pine Island High School in 1958. Daryl married Marlene Horwedel and they were later divorced. He worked at Rockwell Collins for over 30 years, retiring in 1997. Daryl enjoyed observing the stock market, going to the casino, riding motorcycles and driving cars.


Fae Black

Fae Black, 71, of rural Keosauqua, died Thursday morning, June 21, 2012, in a motor vehicle accident at the junction of Salem Road and Highway 218 south of Mount Pleasant. She was born Jan. 30, 1941, at Keosauqua to Otto and Sarah “Tilla” Scotton Long. She married James Franklin. They divorced. She married James Black June 6, 1982 in Keosauqua. He died Oct. 20, 2004.

“Thin nylon BB on LHS on C 3rd D,” the note in my handwriting said, “tshirt/m-drawer/sleeveless.”
I scribbled it a few weeks earlier while talking with Sabra on the telephone. She called from work because she forgot to take a change of clothes with her for our volleyball game at J&A Tap in North Liberty.


Food For Thought

In the “Oxford History of the American People,” Samuel Eliot Morison observed, in 1965, that, “If the American Revolution had produced nothing but the Declaration of Independence, it would have been worthwhile.”
One can barely imagine what our country would be like had that one document never been created. Not only did it define our need for freedom from the British Empire, it provided the impetus to withstand all other attempts to take over and force our submission to the rule of others. Without it, our nation would not have evolved into its present shape and substance.
