Hawk Talk

For the second week in a row the Hawkeye offense couldn’t find the end zone, but the defense kept them in it until the end. It wasn’t enough, and the Iowa State Cyclones held on for a 9-6 win.
I don’t get it. The defense is supposed to be rebuilding and the offense has a senior quarterback, a new offensive coordinator, a solid line and an All-American tight end, but scores only one touchdown in two games!
Going into the game, Iowa was 40-0 with Kirk Ferentz as head coach when they held a team to under 10 points.


Henrietta Shramek

Henrietta Louise Shramek, 81, of Swisher, left this world on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Louise’s wishes were to be cremated and have private family graveside services at Blain Cemetery, rural Swisher.


Ruby Greazel

Ruby F. Greazel, 86, formerly of Iowa City, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at Solon Nursing Care Center.
Memorial Mass was held Sept. 8 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. The Rev. Michael Phillips officiated. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Solon Nursing Care Center.
Ruby was born Nov. 26, 1925, at home in Washington Township near Frytown, the daughter of William and Clara (Bender) Snyder.
Ruby married Leo Greazel March 2, 1946, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.


Jerome Loecke

Jerome “Jerry” Loecke, 67, of Dyersville, formerly of Petersburg, died of cancer on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at Regional Medical Center in Manchester. Funeral Services celebrating Jerry’s life were held Sept. 4 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, with Father John O’Connor officiating. Burial was at St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville, with full military honors afforded by the Dyersville American Legion Post 137.

Andrew Larson

Andrew Larson, 23, of Iowa City, a graduate student at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, died unexpectedly Aug. 23, 2012. The family held a private memorial service Aug. 25 in Iowa City.
Andrew had graduated in May 2011 from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree, having majored in integrative physiology. Local survivors include his parents, Dale and Kristine Larson of North Liberty.


Dorothy F. Joslin

Dorothy F. Joslin, 89, of North Liberty, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Mercy Hospital Iowa City. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Dorothy was born Nov. 4, 1922, in Oxford Junction. Dorothy loved to read and play bingo and puzzles.


Terry Fowler

Terry Lee Fowler, 61, of Iowa City, died Friday, Sept. 31, 2012, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City.
Funeral services were held Sept. 6 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with military honors was held at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.

Walkin'

The drive to Meyersdale, Pa., proved especially long and boring. Ohio and Pennsylvania offer no views from the interstate other than a constant wall of pine trees. Our only diversion was the voice of our female avatar contained within the TomTom navigational system I purchased recently. Why I had it on in the first place is a good question as the route is no more complicated than get on Interstate 80 for 400 miles until it turns into Interstate 76 for another 400 miles.


Food For Thought

One thing I won’t miss, once this election is over with, is the atrocious grammar that comes along with all those campaign speeches. I don’t know if the people who write those speeches are that ignorant of standard English, or if they think it makes them sound homespun. Either way, it offends my ear and, I’m sure, the ears of at least half the people who made it through Mrs. Cotter’s eighth grade English classes.
