Great-grandma’s secrets help Solon pies fill winner’s circle

SOLON– After learning to make pie in 2010 at her great-grandmother’s house in Lone Tree, Brianna Smith went right to work on a prize-winning recipe.
In 2011, she won best overall pie filling, beating adults and entries from the youth division. Brianna is now 12 and this year took the best youth pie honor for her apple pie with caramel sauce topping and homemade crust.


Mobile Mammography Unit in Solon Jan. 16

SOLON– The Mercy Women’s Center mobile mammography van will be in Solon on Jan. 16. The van will be located at the Solon Family Practice Clinic. The mobile mammography unit has been providing convenient access to breast screening services for eastern Iowa women for 26 years.
Anyone wishing to participate needs to contact their local healthcare provider for appropriate paper work and scheduling. Please call 319-861-7778 if you have questions regarding procedures or services provided by the mobile mammography unit.


Solon Spotlight can drive fundraiser Jan. 5

SOLON– Solon Spotlight is hosting a can drive fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 5.
Please drop off your empty cans and bottles at the Solon Fire Station anytime that day from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. If you would like pick up of your containers, please call 319-310-7031.
Solon Spotlight annually provides over $10,000 in support to cover the costs of things such as fees for band and choir competitions, accompanist fees, instrument and technology upgrades, performing arts scholarships and more.


Senior Advocates announce trip to Circa 21

SOLON– “Lonesome Road,” the musical tribute to the late Hank Williams, will be playing at the Circa 21 Dinner Playhouse in Rock Island and the Senior Advocates are planning a trip, Wednesday, Jan. 16, not just for seniors, but anyone who would enjoy memories of this country music icon. Ticket price is $40. Additional donations will be applied to fuel charges and support for the Old Gold Senior Dining site manager’s position. Garbage pickup delayed one day for holidays

Vernon Smith

Vernon E. Smith, 81, of Solon, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Mercy Iowa City. Funeral Mass was held Dec. 24 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. Burial was at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Solon American Legion.


William Sibley

William “Bill” Sibley, 60, of North Liberty, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The funeral service was at Oak Hill Funeral Home in Coralville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.


Joseph Pettit

Joseph Dewayne Pettit, 69, of rural Iowa City, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012.
Memorial services were held Dec. 27 at the American Legion Post #17 in Iowa City; Military honors were provided.
