SOLON– The Solon school board has welcomed some new but familiar faces.
At a Monday, Sept. 16, meeting, board president Dave Asprey and Lianne Westcot retired from service, and the newly elected members filled the vacated seats.
In an emotional resignation, Asprey publicly thanked his peers, citizens of Solon, and most importantly, his family.

Terracon evaluation finds flaws with new asphalt

SOLON– From the moment the dust settled, Solon Public Works director Scott Kleppe knew he wasn’t happy with the asphalt on Main Street.
Now the city has some ammunition to back him up.
At last week’s city council meeting, representatives from Terracon, an Iowa City engineering and consulting company, reported samples of asphalt from the Main Street paving failed to meet the project’s required specifications in a number of ways.
The report confirmed something the city had suspected for a long time.

School board wades into Marshek Ct. drainage

SOLON– Marshek Court residents shared their voices loud and clear at the Monday, Sept. 16, school board meeting.
Board members listened as residents explained the horrors of water damage and opened the discussion to fix the problem.
“Our feelings are, we’ve settled this once and now we have to get back into it again,” said Marshek Court resident Duane Mensen.

High winds cause damage

Payback

Can you believe that Iowa has played the Western Michigan Broncos three times and last Saturday’s 59-3 blowout was their first win?
I was at the first one in 2000 as a fan. That was Kirk Ferentz’s second year and the Hawkeyes lost, 27-21.
The second loss came in 2007 as Iowa went into the game with a 6-5 record and the 28-19 loss to the Broncos kept Iowa out of a bowl game.
That was depressing and I remember the Bronco players doing a lot of trash talking during the game as I was on the sidelines taking pictures for the Leader.
They are not talking much now.
