SOLON– With young lineups, the 2016 cross country season has been a learning experience for Solon. That continued through the WaMaC Conference Meet Oct. 13, where the Solon boys finished 12th in the 16-team field with 316 points.

Running for a ticket to state

SOLON– Cross country is a team sport, with individual recognition. You need five runners who can outrun another school’s top five to place ahead of them. That is the ‘team part.’ The top runners– on that day– are rewarded as ‘medalists.’ That’s the individual perk.
In this season’s first meet, Aug. 27, Solon’s girls mustered a middle of the pack finish, with one top-25 medalist. “We are very young this year. Many of our runners are learning how to run a 5 kilometer race,” explained coach Emy Williams on that day.

Shueyville, Swisher city councils step up for Jeffferson-Monroe department after Cedar Rapids cracks down on fire hydrant use

By Chris Umscheid

SHUEYVILLE– Water supply has been a chronic issue for the Jefferson-Monroe (Swisher) Fire Department.
The all-volunteer force of 27 members serves Swisher, Shueyville and the surrounding rural areas of Jefferson and Monroe townships. Typically, firefighters hook their pumping engines to fire hydrants while battling a blaze in town. However, neither city has a municipal water supply, which means every drop of water used at a fire must be trucked in, like fighting a fire in rural areas.
