Solon fire department continues decades-old tradition of education

Lakeview students still learning the basics of fire safety

SOLON– One by one, kindergarten students at Lakeview Elementary got up on their hands and knees and crawled out of the small gymnasium to the lobby where a fire engine was waiting outside.
It’s the same thing they should be doing if there’s smoke in their home– it’s a lesson taught every year by members of the Solon Tri-Township Fire Department.
Stay low and go.
“We try to touch on some key points every time,” explained Capt. Tim Bell.

Hawkeyes in a blowout (almost)

Hawk Talk

Iowa takes foot off
Purdue’s throat, 49-35

When you are up on a team 35-7 at halftime, you pile up 269 yards rushing, 17 first downs and have the ball for 18:52 of the 30 minutes, you would think you could coast to a win and name your score, right?
Well, Iowa might have taken out the starters a little early and gave the Boilermakers a chance to come back.

The big onion

Walkin'

Talked with Mom and Dad on the phone this morning.
The big news of the day was the Cubs. They don’t have cable so they couldn’t watch the series clincher against the Giants, but they did have a radio tuned in until about 10 p.m. That’s bedtime, they observe it pretty closely. It’s a rare evening that finds them staying up past or, even rarer, going to bed early.
We both agreed it’s actually better listening to it on the radio. The television announcers might be talking about what they had for lunch and completely miss describing the triple being played out on the field.

Life on the acreage

Food For Thought

Although we lived in town with neighbors all around, life on Washington Street was significantly different from the way it had been on First Street where I’d had many neighborhood playmates. There had been, besides Norma Jo and Charles, the Craig twins, Bobby and Beverly; Jackie Slatterback; Dwight and Dwayne Stone; Bert Reynolds; Gladys Fee and Les Stevens.
