Knights 2nd at Solon x-country invitational

Keeney wins for the girls; Gryp takes third to lead the boys

SOLON– The North Central Junior High Knights ran in Solon’s cross-country invitational Monday, Sept. 19. Both girls and boys squads placed second in team points. Cedar Rapids Prairie’s middle school teams won both events with 39 (boys) and 54 points respectively.
Ashlyn Keeney, a seventh-grader at North Central, won the girls event in 11:57, while Bo Gryp crossed the finish line in third place with an 11:23 for the boys.

Three Trojans named to MVC All-Division Golf Teams

IOWA CITY– A trio of West High Trojan golfers were named to the 2016 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) All-Division Selections, released Friday, Oct. 7.
Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Brad Karpick was named the Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year with Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Steve Koepke named the Coach of the Year for the Division.
West High’s Kyle Spence, a sophomore, earned Mississippi Division First Team honors, Kyle Jenkins, a senior, was an Honorable Mention pick along with earning an All-Academic slot with senior Charlie Code.

Creek girls suffer upset loss to Raiders

Williamsburg drops CCA, 3-2

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Creek Girls suffered an upset loss Tuesday, Oct. 4, at home, to the Williamsburg Raiders in varsity volleyball action.
The CCA Clippers came into the contest with a 15-13 record, Williamsburg sat at 8-13. The Clippers took the first set in commanding fashion, 25-12, but dropped the second set, 25-23. The Creek Girls regrouped and took the third set, 25-15, but fell, 25-15, in the fourth and only mustered three points in the fifth set.

CCA shuts out Mid-Prairie in tourney play

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers had a 3-2 showing Saturday, Oct. 8, at their home invitational volleyball tournament.
The Creek Girls swept Mid-Prairie 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) with seven kills from Lauren Helle, five apiece from Shauntina Williams and McKenzie Justice, 17 assists from Cheyanne Bunch and 13 assists from Sheyanne Koethe.

MARION– Throughout this season, Clear Creek Amana (CCA) co-coach Matt Hughes has said, “Sometimes the ball bounces your way, sometimes it doesn’t.” He has also said, “We had Lady Luck on our side tonight.” After a record six wins and no losses, the Clippers sailed into Marion to face the Indians Friday, Oct. 7.
The ball bounced the wrong way and Lady Luck was nowhere to be found as the Indians upset the unbeaten Clippers, 15-14, in overtime.

Creek Boys fifth at Lynx invite

TROY MILLS– The Creek Boys of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) had a fifth-place showing Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Lynx Invitational hosted by North Linn High School in far northern Linn County.
Mount Pleasant took the varsity race with 78 team points followed by Marion (108), Ames (127), Mid-Prairie (135) and the Clippers with 191. 28 teams made up the field with WaMaC foes Williamsburg placing seventh (228), Vinton-Shellsburg placing 11th (306), Benton Community 13th (318) and Solon placing 20th (457). The host Lynx were 21st with 540.

Women of Troy shut out Trojans

IC West sweeps Waterloo East, 3-0

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy swept the Waterloo East High School Trojans Tuesday, Oct. 4, at West High. West entered the contest with a 14-9 record and the No. 8-ranking in Class 5A (Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Sept. 29 weekly rankings) while the Trojans brought an 8-19 record. West took the first set, 25-16, pulled off a 25-21 win in the second set and shut down the Trojans, 25-15, for the third and final set.

Iowa City West gets 24-10 road win at Cedar Rapids Kennedy

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Iowa City West High Trojans picked up a decisive 24-10 win over the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars Friday, Oct. 7, at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
The Trojans built a 17-0 lead in the first half on a 9-yard touchdown reception by Devontae Lane, a 29-yard field goal by Lucas Karwal and a 5-yard pass to Oliver Martin in the final seconds of the half.
Kennedy regrouped and threatened in the second half.

North Liberty youth fall ball expands on summer’s success

NORTH LIBERTY– Some kids don’t know when to quit. For the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball league, that’s a good thing.
A 900-plus player operation in the summer, the league has been seeing more turnover into the fall season, when a five-week clinic is offered through the Diamond Dreams Sports Academy.
“Obviously the partnership is working because kids are coming back, for one, and new kids are signing up,” said Diamond Dreams’ general manager Kyle Sherman.
After a 998-player and 83-team summer season, NLYBS had 140 kindergarteners through eighth graders sign up for fall ball.

CCA Supper for “Old Folks” Nov. 5

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Nov. 5, the CCA Student Assistance Team and Interact Club hosts its annual Supper for “Older Folks.” In other words, those aged 55 or older are invited to supper. Supper for “Old Folks” will serve turkey, ham mashed potatoes and a potluck of dishes the 30 or so kids bring to share.
