Kathryne LaVonne Underwood, 82, longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Services were held June 20 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.


Charmion Valenta

Charmion R. Valenta, 91, of Cottage Grove Place, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a short illness. A service of remembrance will be held on July 6, 2011, at Cottage Grove Place. Inurnment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen of Solon and David of Bellevue, Neb. She is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and one sister.

It’s 25 years and counting for the Prime Time Basketball League in the North Liberty Recreation Center, and with the big crowds and good talent, the league will be going for years to come.
It’s a chance to see the new recruits for the Hawkeyes, the current players and some former Iowa players including Darrel Moore, Jason Price and Duez Henderson.
Plus, there are some talented UNI athletes and small college players from around the region.

Elaine Reynolds and Bev Noska honored by Senior Advocates

SOLON– Bev Noska and Elaine Reynolds have spent a lot of time volunteering together.
Enough that one can finish the other’s sentence, at least when it comes to discussing their contribution of time and effort.
“You get more out of it,” Elaine started; “than you can ever give,” Bev finished.
The two were recognized by the Solon Senior Advocates as Seniors of the Year for 2011, an award given out annually since 2006, for their involvement in the community.


Putting down roots, giving them wings

ELY– Many drivers along Ely road have recently been treated to an uncommon sight.
Two trumpeter swans have made the wetland pond just south of Ely their new home for the summer.
And perhaps, if all goes as planned, forever.
The male and female pair was released on May 18 as part of an Iowa Department of Natural Resource (DNR) program to repopulate trumpeter swans in Iowa. Prior to the settlement of Iowa, the bird was common in the state until the 1930s, when the swan population began to diminish. Since 1993 the DNR has been working to repopulate Iowa with trumpeter swans.


July 4 sale at Our Lord’s Church

Fourth of July at Lake Macbride

SOLON– Sailors get out the streamers and float your boat on July 4 at 4 p.m. in the Lake Macbride boat parade.  Decorate your boat and line up at causeway at 4 p.m. on July 4.

Solon night at the Kernels July 2

CEDAR RAPIDS– Saturday, July 2, will be Solon night at the Cedar Rapids Kernels. This is an annual tradition and it’s a great opportunity for members of the Solon community to gather and support the Cedar Rapids Kernels while enjoying a great night at the ballpark. Solon community members can be involved in on-field contests, pre-game parade of teams, and presentation of the American flag during the national anthem. Plus there will be fireworks after the game! The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the activities begin at 6:35 p.m.


Moo-Cow-Angelo spoofs Sistine Chapel masterpiece

SOLON– Doug and Lori Lindner selected freelance artist Deda Happel’s “Moo-Cow-Angelo” to decorate the calf the Solon Economist is sponsoring for the Solon Library Foundation’s Calf Classic. Deda’s creation is a colorful and delightful spoof of a Michelangelo rendition of the Creation painted on the Sistine Chapel.
