City considers support for microbrewery

SOLON– It’s not a done deal.
But the City of Solon is considering a package of financial incentives which could result in the demolition of a downtown business to make way for a new microbrewery.
At last Wednesday’s Solon City Council meeting, Solon Mayor Cami Rasmussen confirmed tentative plans to work with the owners of Red’s Alehouse in North Liberty regarding a proposal to tear down the current location of Joensy’s Restaurant and replace it with a new structure.

Solon queen wows Johnson County judges

SOLON- Despite a stifling heat wave, Rebecca Haugland remained calm, cool and collected as she captured the crown on the outdoor fairgrounds stage last week in Iowa City. Rebecca showed poise, leadership qualities and communication skills that were judged to be a cut above the rest.
Haugland was crowned Johnson County Fair Queen for 2012 and will take the stage in Des Moines for a chance at the state title. She’ll be representing her hometown 4-H club, Macbride’s Pride in Solon, at the state fair contest beginning Aug. 9, where she’ll introduce herself to the rest of the state.

Solon blood drive Aug. 18 at Methodist church

DAVENPORT– Solon United Methodist Church will host a community blood drive from 7:30 until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center located at 122 N. West St., Solon.
To donate, please contact Chris Ciasto at 563-349-1608 for an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.
Donor Eligibility Criteria: Potential donors must be at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission form available through www.bloodcenter.org) and weigh more than 110 pounds.

Free meal at Old Gold Diner reset for Aug. 15

SOLON– The Senior Advocate sponsored meal at Old Gold Senior Dining has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 15. This is because the Advocate newsletter is a week late and will appear in the Economist, Wednesday, Aug. 8, consequently seniors will not have time to reserve a meal.
Be sure and call 624-2251 for reservations for the sponsored meal before noon Tuesday, Aug. 14. Doug Lindner from the Solon Economist and North Liberty Leader will be our speaker. Birthday cake and ice cream are always treats on sponsored meal days, cakes courtesy of Jeanne Erhart and Betty Buchmayer.

Benefit to support the Mertka family Aug. 16

SOLON– A benefit for the Abby, Jeff, Brittany and Lily Mertka family will be held at the Celebration Farm, Double Round Barn 4696 Robin Woods Ln. NE, Iowa City, Thursday, Aug. 16, from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m.
Activities include a dinner, silent auction, 50/50 raffle, kids activities, bake sale, photo booth, and more. If you are unable to attend, monetary donations can be made to the Abby Mertka Care Fund at the University of Iowa Community Credit Union.

Sutliff Bridge street dance fundraiser set for Sept. 2

SUTLIFF– The Sutliff Bridge Authority will hold its Labor Day Street Dance fund raiser on Sunday, Sept. 2, from 1 until 5 p.m. adjacent to the bridge with music by the Hot Hand Blues Band. Gates open at noon.
Donation of $5 at gate goes towards future preservation of the bridge.
Food and beverage will be available for purchase. Please no coolers.

Trout resigns head volleyball position with Solon district

SOLON– The Solon Community School District (SCSD) announced late Monday that its varsity volleyball coach has resigned.

Equipment handout for 7th and 8th football Aug. 16 & 20 at middle school

SOLON– Students interested in playing seventh and eighth grade football will have equipment handouts on the following dates and times:
• Eighth grade, Thursday, Aug. 16, starting at 4 p.m. in the athletic hallway at the middle school.
• Seventh grade, Monday, Aug. 20, starting at 4 p.m. in the athletic hallway at the middle school.

SOLON– Anyone interested in sponsoring the 2012 Solon varsity football team should return their donations by Monday, Aug. 13.
