Lady Spartans sweep Central DeWitt

SOLON– The Lady Spartans have made the most out of their three homes matches, but the next two are biggies.
Solon’s varsity volleyball squad returned home for a 3-0 sweep of Central DeWitt last week after taking northern road trips to face Western Dubuque and Dyersville Beckman. Beckman stretched the Lady Spartans out to five games, while Solon made short work of Western Dubuque.
Coming up, however, are home matches (Oct. 2 and Oct. 4) against two highly ranked teams in West Delaware (4A, No. 6) and Mount Vernon (3A, No. 7).

Lady Spartans 1st at home

SOLON– A rerouted cross country course through the Solon Recreation and Nature Area agreed with the Spartan girls. Senior Lauren Benzing won the individual championship and– with help from her third ranked Class 3A teammates– carted off the team trophy as well. The meet was run through clouds, light rain and wind. “I felt really strong; stronger than any race this year,” said Benzing, who finished in 15:08. “The course was flat and fast.”

Boys take fourth place at Solon Invitational and Anamosa

SOLON– For Patrick McGill, it was a job well run. Twice.
Job One was apparent. McGill was the first Spartan runner across the finish line at the Solon Invitational cross country meet. The junior finished 13th in 17:36, as Solon finished fourth in the nine-team boys’ race. “The course was fast. It helped that (teammate) Zach Slusher pushed me to the end,” said McGill.

No rest on Sunday

OXFORD– A topic that enflamed passions on both sides of the issue, and led to some of the most spirited discussions seen at a CCA school board meeting in recent years has been laid to rest.
For now.
The Clear Creek Amana School District Board of Directors met Wednesday, Sept. 19, in Oxford and revisited a proposed change to the district’s Open Night policy. Currently, the policy forbids school-related activities on Wednesday night. A revised policy would have put a moratorium on Sunday evening events as well, such as athletic practice.

Tiffin Locker to become history, more help coming to city hall

TIFFIN– The Tiffin City Council held its first meeting of the month Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Springmier Community Library with a lengthy agenda.
Continuing a process started earlier this year to bring three outlying areas into the growing city, the council held more discussion of annexation. City Administrator/City Clerk Michon Jackson said residents in the “Priority One” area, which is bordered by 340th Street on the north, Hwy. 218 on the east, 360th Street on the south and Jasper Avenue on the west, will receive another letter, probably before the end of the month.

Independent practice still alive and well in NL

NORTH LIBERTY– Twenty-five years ago, it was an opportunity for a young doctor to practice medicine. In the time since, North Liberty Family Health Centre, PC, has grown into one of very few independent offices in the state of Iowa, and is still going strong.

Aspiring young author programs and new story time at NL Library

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Library (NLCL) is offering display space for books written by children. If you like to write stories, make your story into a book and bring it to the NLCL to share. Aspiring authors sixth grade and under can bring their books to the library through Oct. 31. Books will be displayed in the children’s area. These books will not be available for checkout, but available for everyone to read in the library.
