First youth triathalon at NL aquatic center to be held Aug. 4

NORTH LIBERTY— The North Liberty Aquatic Center is hosting its first ever Youth Triathlon Aug. 4 and is are looking for support. The Aquatic Center is in need of volunteers from 8:30 until 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, to help this event to get kids moving. All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. NL Pantry invites everyone to Thanksgiving in July

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) invites local businesses to participate in Thanksgiving in July.
The last two years, local financial institutions held food drives and competed for a traveling turkey trophy, awarded in 2011 to Hills Bank & Trust for amassing the most contributions. In total, the North Liberty Community Pantry received the equivalent of more than 10,000 pounds of food in July 2011.
This year the NLCP is opening the invitation to all businesses to compete in the Thanksgiving in July event.

Red’s sponsors poker run June 30

NORTH LIBERTY– Red’s Alehouse will sponsor its third annual Poker Run on Saturday, June 30, to benefit the North Liberty Fire Department. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at Red’s Alehouse, 405 N. Dubuque St., North Liberty, with an entry fee of $15 per person or $25 for rider and passenger. The ride leaves at 10 a.m. with stops in West Branch, Riverside, Keota and Williamsburg. The ride ends at Red’s Alehouse around 4 p.m. There will be prizes for first, second and third place hands, raffle ticket prizes, and a 50/50 cash drawing.

Council meetings now at 6:30 p.m.

NORTH LIBERTY–North Liberty City Council meetings have a new start time. Meetings will now begin at 6:30 p.m., and will still be held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the North Liberty City Council chambers, 1 Quail Creek Cir., North Liberty.
The meetings will still be televised live and re-run during later dates on North Liberty Television (NLTV).

Holy Trinity to host Wildwood Forest VBS in July

NORTH LIBERTY– Holy Trinity Church invites area children to join in Vacation Bible School and Day Camp scheduled for July 23-27, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 650 240th St. NE, North Liberty.
Holy Trinity, a growing Lutheran church in North Liberty, is planning an action-packed week of summer fun for children.

Women of Troy split, trading shut-outs and remembering “Line”

IOWA CITY– Tuesday night was tough for the Women of Troy, when the squad faced-off against a potential regional semifinal opponent. The Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead galloped into town, and West was dealt its first loss in 17 outings.
Tuesday also would have been the 18th birthday of beloved friend and teammate, the late Caroline Found.

Clipper girls are red hot

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) scoreboards are getting quite a workout these days. The board at the boys’ diamond in Tiffin sputtered and failed during a June 14 doubleheader against Waterloo Columbus that saw 27 runs go up in one game. Monday, June 18, the board in Oxford at the softball diamond wouldn’t even turn on.
Perhaps it knew the Clippers were going to fry its electronic mind with 42 runs over seven innings.

J-Hawks one better than Trojans last week in Iowa City , with Jefferson 8, West High 7

IOWA CITY– The Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks got past the West High Trojans Monday, June 18, on West’s diamond, winning 8-7 in varsity action.

Swisher sets its course for the future

SWISHER– “If Swisher doesn’t define itself, someone else will.”
But Kehla West, Swisher’s summer planning intern, said she believes the community is too valuable for that to happen.
West grew up on a farm in a similar-sized town in Indiana and will conduct a June community survey about Swisher’s future. In May, she started work as a part-time intern to draft a comprehensive plan for the town.

National champion cheer gym recognizes NL athletes

NORTH LIBERTY– Rebel Xtreme, Inc., eastern Iowa’s all-star cheerleading and tumbling/trampoline gym, finished its 2011-2012 season this spring, with a number of significant accomplishments for the program’s team and individuals.
