Local governments share top priorities, local issues

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s (ICCSD) plans to sell Roosevelt Elementary, and its continued redistricting efforts dominated the conversation at a joint government meeting last week.
Representatives from ICCSD, Johnson County and the cities of Coralville, Iowa City, North Liberty, Hills, Lone Tree and University Heights gathered at the Iowa City Public Library on March 21 for a quarterly joint governmental meeting, primarily an information-sharing opportunity between the entities.

Judge denies injunction on Von Maur deal

IOWA CITY– A district court judge has ruled that Coralville may proceed with a multi-million dollar economic development deal, at least for now.
Plaintiffs in a March 1 petition had asked the court for a temporary injunction to halt the City of Coralville’s proposed land sale to Von Maur department store. The deal would give Von Maur an estimated $14 million in incentives to relocate from Sycamore Mall to Coralville’s Iowa River Landing (IRL) area, paid for through Tax Increment Financing (TIF).

School tax levy to decrease

IOWA CITY– ICCSD has recommended a decrease in its property tax share from $14.59 per $1,000 of residential assessed value to $14.13 per $1,000.
The state’s assessment limitation, set by the Iowa Department of Revenue on residential and other property, rose this year, from 48.53 percent to 50.752 percent. The rollback change offsets the tax decrease and adds up to the smallest increase in several years for area residential property owners.
Homeowners in the district with an assessed property value of $100,000 will be levied just under nine dollars more than their previous tax bill.

NORTH LIBERTY– One dish. That’s the secret for many restaurants to succeed. If you get that one dish right, the customers will come.
For Zameer Kahn, owner of the new Zaika Restaurant in North Liberty, that dish is Ghobi Manchurian, which features breaded and fried cauliflower (ghobi) covered in a mildly spicy red sauce.
Kahn said he created his special recipe for the Indochinese dish and others have copied it. Laughing, he said he’s seen it on the menu at other area restaurants.
