Hale Conlee

Charles Hale Conlee, 88, of Solon, formerly of Cantril, died at 2:23 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Solon Nursing Care Center. He was born Sept. 24, 1923, near Cantril to Charles and Chloe Hale Conlee and married Mildred Lucke Johnson Aug. 14, 1960, in Cantril. She died Sept. 25, 2008. Hale graduated from Milton High School in 1940, served in the U.S. Army as an aircraft mechanic in Hawaii, Philippine Islands and Japan during World War II and was a long-time member of the Russell-Strait Post No. 483 of the American Legion, Milton.

William Huston

William R. Huston, 65, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, in his home following an extended struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. The family insured that William’s last days were spent in his home and they were present until the very end. A memorial service was held Jan. 25 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include his son, David (Lisa) Huston, of Swisher.

Lyle Johnston

Lyle E. Johnston, 77, passed away Jan. 18, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. No services ate planned at this time. Per Lyle’s wishes, his body has been cremated. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family with arrangements.
Local survivors include Susan (Ed) Slattery of Swisher.
Lyle Eugene Johnston was born Oct. 17, 1934, in Grinnell, the son of Floyd and Hazel (Parks) Johnston. He married Shirley Turbett on June 9, 1956, in Waterloo. Lyle was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserves.

Edmund Jones

Edmund “Sunk” Jones, 86, of Ely, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at his home. Funeral services were held Jan. 28, at Shueyville United Methodist Church in Shueyville. Burial followed in Rogers Grove Cemetery.
Edmund was born Feb. 22, 1925, in Williamsburg, to Ed and Polly (Lewis) Jones. He graduated from Ely High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Sunk married Ellen Klinsky on June 18, 1953, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ely. Sunk farmed for over 40 years around Ely. He was a former volunteer fireman for the Ely Fire Department.

Joseph Loan

Joseph Patrick “Pat” Loan, 77, of Tiffin, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral Mass was held Jan. 27 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove. The Rev. Edmond Dunn officiated. A private burial was held at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove.

Joyce Ritscher

Joyce Ann Ritscher, 68, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Keystone, died of cancer on Jan. 18, 2012, at the home of her daughter in Chicago. A memorial service was held Jan. 23 at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone, with Pastor Richard Osslund officiating. Committal services were held at Holy Cross Cemetery near Keystone.
Joyce was born Sept. 20, 1943, in Vinton to Delbert and Lucille (Holst) Junge, and graduated from the Keystone High School in 1961. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone and she sold real restate.
Local survivors include Doug (Jeanne) Junge of Swisher.

Mary Kay Volz

Mary Kay Volz, 65, of Norway, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at All-American Restorative Care of Washington. Services were held Jan. 25 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Norway, with the Rev. Brian Dellaert and the Rev. Tom Zinkula officiating. Private family burial: St. Michael’s Cemetery. Local survivors include Roger (DeeAnna) Volz of North Liberty.

Hawk Talk

Here we go again
The great schedule makers had Nebraska playing the Hawkeye men in Iowa City last Thursday at 6 p.m. and the Iowa women playing Nebraska at Lincoln at 7 p.m. on the same night.
The men’s game was on TV, the women’s was on 1350 AM radio which might as well been from western Canada because it doesn’t come through in Johnson County after dark.
It’s tough enough to lose to Nebraska in football in their first season in the Big Ten but to lose to both the men’s and women’s basketball teams in the same night…

School jazz fests coming up

SOLON– Dorothy Jacobi is doing what she loves every day. She comes in early each day for Jazz I and II to lead, coach and play along in the Solon Middle School jazz scene.
Her favorite part? Watching the music take shape as students begin to command their instruments. She credits the concert ensemble for the high level of playing in the jazz program.
