New Kum and Go store to offer additional convenience

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council approved a site plan for a new convenience store located on the northeast corner of Kansas Avenue and Penn Street.
Kum N Go, LC, has proposed a 3,391 sq. ft. building to be built on Lininger Lane, just off Kansas Avenue. The store will have a masonry façade and offer eight gas pumps.
Dave Lemons, real estate development representative for Kum N Go, presented the concept for the new store to the City Council last Tuesday, June 9. Lemons said the city’s growth was the main attraction for the convenience chain to locate in North Liberty.

NORTH LIBERTY– Another North Liberty restaurant will soon offer outdoor dining.
The North Liberty City Council supported a proposed revision to the property at 405 N. Dubuque Street, the location of the popular dining spot occupied by Red’s Alehouse. Owners Matt and Faye Swift have asked to build an outdoor dining area in the point area between Main Street and Dubuque Street.
“The proposal is for a highly developed area,” City Planner Dean Wheatley told the council last Tuesday, June 9. “There will be a gas fire pit feature, trees, and up-lighting.”

TIFFIN — It began with a proposal. A bond issue was debated to finance it. Weather added delays in the construction schedule. Now, as the 2008-2009 school year comes to an end, the new Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School is entering the final phase of construction and preparation so as to be ready for the start of school in the fall.

Windham Community Church to host annual Ice Cream Social

OXFORD– On Sunday, June 28 from 4-7 p.m. the Windham Community Church, located at 1424 Black Diamond Road SW, Oxford, is hosting its annual Ice Cream Social. The Social will feature old fashioned, hand-cranked, homemade ice cream along with cakes and pies. There is a free will donation.

Walkin'

It’s not going to be a good week for Buzz.
Now 10 years old or about 80 in big-dog years, the old hound is still in pretty good shape thanks to a strict diet and regular exercise. Since he was a puppy, we’ve walked three or more miles a day, every day with only a few exceptions. In his prime, I’d estimate that for every mile I’d go Buzz would travel 10, ranging far and wide to turn up a deer, squirrel or wrapper still holding a cheeseburger molecule or two.


Food for Thought

My mother and grandmother called it pie plant. That pretty much says it all – they almost exclusively made it into pies. It was a rare day when rhubarb appeared on the table in any other form. Once in a great while, there would appear a dish of pinkish, stringy-looking something – a sort of puckery, sweet and sour sauce that we generally turned up our noses at.


Harry L. Baker

Harry L. Baker, 90, of Lone Tree and formerly of Iowa City, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at the Lone Tree Health Care Center in Lone Tree.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 5, at the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree. Visitation was held June 4 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Interment will be at a later date in the Lone Tree Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Harry’s memory to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church of Iowa City.
