City seeks data for Highway 1 stoplight

SOLON– On a typical spring day, just over 11,000 vehicles cross the intersection of Highway and 5th Street in Solon.
Most of them (9,172) are either north or southbound on the Highway. The rest are heading east and west.
But that’s not enough to warrant a traffic signal at the intersection, according to a study by the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC).

Ag engineer gets hands dirty at veggie farm

SOLON- Kate Edwards rented an acre of land in 2010, christened it Wild Woods Farm, and dug into the clay hilltop near Sugar Bottom Road.
She dug in to the work, too, she said, and she should know farming.
An agricultural engineer trained at Iowa State University, Edwards said her grandparents have been her biggest influence on her love of farming. She said she wasn’t sure how far back her family has been farming, but you can tell it’s in her blood.

Solon American Legion fundraiser breakfast Sunday, Oct. 21

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold a breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the legion hall from 7 a.m. until noon.
The costs is $7 for adults, $4 for children (6-12), and five and under are free for all-you-care-to-eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, juice, coffee and milk. All proceeds go to the Legion’s new interior painting and renovations.

Old Gold Dining site council seeking weekday meal delivery drivers

SOLON– The site council of Old Gold Senior Dining is looking for a person to transport meals from Senior Dining at the Senior Center on Linn Street in Iowa City to the Old Gold Senior Dining site at the Solon United Methodist Church Monday through Friday. Sutliff Bridge ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, Oct. 12

SUTLIFF– The historic Sutliff Bridge officially reopens Friday, Oct. 12, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m.
The ceremony will include Johnson County and FEMA officials, as well as representatives of the Sutliff Bridge Authority and two entities that worked on the project, VJ Engineering and Iowa Bridge and Culvert.
The bridge will be open to the public after the ceremony. The Sutliff Bridge Authority will hold a reopening celebration at a later date.

Tony Nicol returns home

SOLON– Tony Nicol knows Solon. He’s a Spartan who basically never left the area. Now after an eight-year absence (he was briefly the Solon Middle School (SMS) counselor), he’s back for good as Solon’s Middle School counselor/facilitator and varsity girls basketball coach.

Solon Post Prom outlet sale scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3

SOLON– Solon’s Post Prom Party committee will be holding a Solon Outlet Sale of used clothing and sporting goods sale at the Solon Middle School commons Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9-11 a.m.
Please donate any used Solon Spartan apparel as well as any sporting goods equipment such as cleats, gloves, athletic apparel, etc. Please make sure donations are clean and in good condition. Donations can be dropped off at any of the three schools in labeled boxes and will be collected Oct. 1 through 19. All proceeds for this fundraiser will be used for the 2013 Post Prom Party.

Lady Spartans overpower ranked foes

SOLON– Mount Vernon was ranked No. 6 in Class 3A; West Delaware was ranked eighth in 4A.
How would the Solon Lady Spartans handle two tough teams, one a longtime rival, in one week?
Apparently, just fine.
Solon’s varsity volleyball team blew through both of its ranked opponents last week, solidifying its grasp on the championship of the regular season WaMaC East.
The Lady Spartans swept Mount Vernon, 25-17, 27-25, 25-22, then dropped a game to West Delaware before taking control, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12, 25-18.
