The city digs out

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Streets Department crews worked nearly around the clock to keep traffic moving during and after last week’s record snowfalls.
According to Streets Superintendent Don Colony, six city workers kept four large snowplows and one endloader busy for two days to clear the 10-plus inches of snow that fell between Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 8 and 9.

Van Allen wins whiteboard from HyVee, Proctor & Gamble

NORTH LIBERTY– Van Allen Elementary School in North Liberty was one of four local schools to win a Proctor & Gamble production promotion contest co-sponsored by Hy-Vee food stores. The school was awarded an interactive, computer-networked SMART Board, a large whiteboard that uses touch screen technology to allow manipulation of objects projected onto the whiteboard. The Coralville Hy-Vee store also donated an Epson projector and stand to Van Allen to facilitate use of the whiteboard. A SMART Board typically retails for $1,400.

Christmas Tree Safety Tips form the North Liberty Fire Dept.

NORTH LIBERTY– Christmas Trees add a special feeling and tradition to the holiday season but can also create danger to your home and family. On average, Christmas trees are the source of nearly 250 home fires each year, resulting in nearly 14 million dollars worth of damage. The North Liberty Fire Department wants you all to have a safe holiday season, so here are some tips to help prevent Christmas trees from catching fire.
Remember to check all tree lights for frayed or damaged wiring.
Replace any non-working bulbs.

City of North Liberty imposes holiday hours

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty city offices will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 24 and Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, for the Christmas holiday. For the New Years holiday, the city offices will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 and Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.
During the Holidays, garbage collection will be as regularly scheduled on Wednesdays.
At the North Liberty Recreation Center, holiday hours will be as follows: Closed Thursday, Dec. 24 and Friday, Dec. 25. On Saturday, Dec. 26 and Sunday, Dec. 27, the center will be open during regular hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Meet the candidates at Jan. 7 forum

IOWA CITY– The League of Women Voters, Johnson County, (LWVJC) will host a Candidates’ Forum for the Johnson County supervisory candidates Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Iowa City Public Library, meeting room A.
LWVJC member Alison Smith will moderate the forum, which will consist of a 5-minute introductory statement from each candidate, followed by questions formulated by the League, as well as written questions taken from the audience. The LWVJC will provide cards for audience members to submit written questions as they enter.

JCHT collecting leftover Christmas trees for fish habitat

JOHNSON COUNTY– Wondering what to do with your leftover Christmas trees?
Bring them to swim with the fishes.
Leftover Christmas trees can be used in ponds as fish habitats. Fish enjoy using natural wood for laying eggs and as secure hiding places. Johnson County Heritage Trust volunteers will place leftover Christmas trees in the Belgum Grove pond for this purpose.
Clear your trees of decoration– especially tinsel– and bring them to the Johnson County Heritage Trust Belgum Grove property, four miles west of Hills, on the south side of 500th St. (County Road F62).

Roadway to the future: long-range planning the focus for CCA board

OXFORD — With cuts in state aid a reality, further cuts a possibility, and the status of the current economy uncertain, school districts face the challenge of balancing current needs against future growth. The Board of Directors for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School District focused on developing a long-range facilities plan during a pair of meetings Nov. 18 at Clear Creek Elementary.

CORALVILLE — The girls of Junior Troop 620 in North Liberty had 20 activities to choose from in their pursuit of the coveted Bronze Award; they could have completed a neighborhood tree planting project, worked on a dog park for North Liberty, cleaned up local Girl Scout camps, or even made cat and dog items for an animal shelter.
Instead, they chose to race.
